South Medford relished the chance to get outside for a match and made the most of it, downing Ashland in nonleague boys soccer, 3-0, at South Medford High Tuesday. “It wasn’t the best match,” said coach Claudio Villa, following the Panthers’ season opener. “But when you’re training indoors for three weeks or more, it wasn’t as pretty as I expected, but a win is a win. We’ll take it any day. I’m hoping we’ll catch a little break from the weather and can train outdoors.” Mark Anguiano put South Me

OCEAN OUTLOOK COASTWIDE: Good ocean conditions are forecast through the weekend, which has been rare of late. Look for 5-knot winds and 2-foot wind waves today, followed Saturday by winds up to 10 knots and a mixed swell of about 3 feet. Sunday will see much of the same as Saturday. Back when my younger brother and I were adventurous, tow-headed boys who lived near the ocean, one of the year’s most anticipated moments came the summer week my mother would bring out the same book and read it to us — snippets at a time — every night as we listened from our beds. It was called “Dory Boy,” a “tween-age book” by Joan Talmage Weiss that told the story of Danny, an adventurous tow-headed boy who lived near the ocean. I don’t remember many details. Danny learned the family fishing b

PORT ORFORD — Erin Kessler pedals down a sketchy pathway to Battle Rock Beach, her chubby bicycle tires easily weathering the transition from gravel to sand. The nearly 5-inch-wide tires act like snowshoes on the soft sand, dispersing her weight. “See how stable this is?” says Kessler, 33. “I’m just floating over the sand.” Kessler pops a wheelie that drops her into the soft surf and down Battle Rock Beach she goes, the latest to reveal how being fat on the beach definitely can be a good thing.

Ask any member of Waking Hazel how the bluegrass band got its name, and you’ll never get the same answer twice. “We’re influenced by a goat named Hazel, old-time music artist Hazel Dickens, and one the members’ kids is named Hazel,” says Michael Lindgren, the band’s upright bass player. Waking Hazel’s lineup — Jessie Monter on fiddle, Bekkah McAlvage on guitar, Dave Brendlinger on mandolin, Rachel Buklad on banjo, and Lindgren — evolved from musicians who met regularly at local bluegrass jams. “

Galactic keyboard player Rich Vogel admits it’s pretty satisfying to consider how the band has gone from an upstart on a legendary early ’90s New Orleans music scene to arguably the leading band in the Crescent City. “We talk about it a lot. It’s a nice place to be, and it’s an honor,” Vogel says. “We became the band we used to see on Mardi Gras and Halloween. We would be at Tipitina’s, and Dr. John would be playing. We were checking out everything, all the brass bands and stuff. “The Neville Br

In June we drove to Glass Mountain in Northern California, and an unexpected snowstorm mostly obliterated our hiking views, so we made plans to return, which we did recently. This time around, sunny skies allowed our small hiking group to wander about the trails on Glass Mountain and see things we’d missed the first time, such as exposed slabs of obsidian, some black slabs seemingly shimmering, others textured with soft tones of red and brown. Best of all, a short hike up the road from the main
