The City of Ashland, the U.S. Forest Service and different user groups have done a great job of rerouting and repurposing trails to keep different user groups — hikers, bikers, runners, equestrians — from conflicting with each other. But there are still a few spots where these groups end up on top of each other. One of them is called Waterline. Additional footage by Matt Townsend, Kevin Kushima & Ryan Marquez. “A life review is what I am doing and writing. I am finally defining me — just me.” So begins Carol Hays’ memoir. The autobiography, stitched together with scripture, wistful reminiscing and thoughtful reflection, is the result of an eight-week writing class, and she admits “more of a spiritual journey” than a walk down memory lane. “It’s more than just a factual” charting of a timeline of her life, says the 81-year-old. “It’s a journey through a life that my children hadn’t known or understood.

“Spheroid Fruit, pleasing To taste, fattened By water gushing in all The gardens, glossy cupped In its petiole, ah heart Of a lamb in A vulture’s claws.” — Ibn Sara of Santarem, Portuguese poet, circa 1123 I love the way the words of this 12th century poem about eggplant are shaped like the “spheroid fruit,” and how the author vividly describes a purple eggplant as the “heart of a lamb” and the fuzzy calyx that grips the top of an eggplant as “a vulture’s claws.” What’s more, it’s fascinating to

TALENT — Farmers and gardeners may never have heard of Sebastian Aguilar, his wife Kelly Gelino or Chickadee Farm. Yet, without the work that goes on in the 12-acre plot, and similar operations, next year’s crops might not get planted. Aguilar and his wife have leased the erstwhile pear orchard off Foss Road from Harry & David’s Bear Creek Orchards for the past six years, contracting with seed companies each January for delivery in November and December. They’ve been organic farmers for 21 years

A $12.5 million, 50-unit low-income residential building in downtown Medford at the corner of Sixth and Grape streets will begin construction next March, the Jackson County Housing Authority announced Wednesday. “We’re ready to go,” said Andrea Miranda, project developer for the Housing Authority. “A good portion of the folks with disabilities work downtown. Sometimes a big barrier for them is transportation. Now, they will live where they work.” Miranda

Federal prosecutors may have gone too far when they insisted on five-year prison sentences for Eastern Oregon ranchers Dwight and Steven Hammond, but President Trump went too far when he granted complete pardons to the Hammonds for committing arson on public land. Predictably, the president’s action has emboldened the anti-government extremists who occupied a wildlife refuge and their supporters who oppose federal ownership of public land. The Hammonds were convicted by a jury in 2012 for illega

There are speed-limit signs throughout the city of Medford and Jackson County. But I have seen official signs that say "End Speed Limit." That's absolutely insane and is asking for trouble. Would you give me a ticket if you caught me going 80 mph in one of those areas? If so, wouldn't I have a darn good case to get the ticket thrown out by a judge if I took it to court, because of those signs? — Dean L., Medford Would I give you a ticket if you were doing 80 mph? The Medford Rogues erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead but the offensive barrage didn’t end there Thursday. The Rogues chalked up 10 runs in the sixth inning and finished with franchise records in both hits and runs scored in a 27-6 victory over the San Francisco Seals, the first of a three-game series at Harry & David Field. As one-sided as the score indicates, the fourth-inning outburst was much needed as the Seals (18-26) had just scored four runs in t

Jackson County Circuit Judge Patricia Crain, who helped pioneer local drug treatment courts, will retire on Aug. 31. Her retirement will create a vacancy that will be filled by an appointee of Gov. Kate Brown. Crain won re-election to her seat in 2016 for another six-year term. During her campaign, she said she remained enthusiastic about her job and had every intention of serving out her full term if re-elected. Crain, 71, said on Friday that family and health considerations change as people ge

With a bullet in her gut, her voice choked with pain, Dee Hill pleaded with the 911 dispatcher for help. “My husband accidentally shot me,” Hill, 75, of The Dalles, groaned on the May 16, 2015, call. “In the stomach, and he can’t talk, please … “ Less than four feet away, Hill’s husband, Darrell Hill, a former local police chief and two-term county sheriff, sat in his wheelchair with a discharged Glock handgun on the table in front of him, unaware that he’d nearly killed his wife of almost 57 ye

If there is beauty in hope, then Wendy Werthaiser sees life as an Impressionist painting. The 49-year-old Ashland cyclist — who is visually impaired with a degenerative disease called Cone-Rod Dystrophy — frequently races past Ashland vineyards and orchards on a tandem bike with her pilot Jill Williams. “The best way to describe my vision now would be to think of a Monet painting,” Werthaiser says. “That is how I see. Things aren’t really clear and can appear cloudy. I can’t make out faces or re

Four grass fires in a month along the Bear Creek Greenway, including one that burned 97 acres and killed a homeless man in Central Point, have local police and fire officials on the lookout for people who still insist on lighting campfires. On Thursday afternoon, two days after the human-caused Peninger fire brought Central Point to a standstill , Medford police arrested Elaina Marie Mann, 42, after they saw her light a campfire along the Greenway near the Garfield overpass, according to Medford

Summer’s inferno is on a tear with flame and fearsome temperatures. Some folks swear they predict the approach of a cold front through achy joints. I sense the heat index rising with the first cicada’s refrain, the assembling of the county fair Tilt-a-Whirl, and the appearance of two or three zucchinis of the Cricket Bat variety in my fridge. There’s no mistaking when the signs line up. That’s when my seagull friends beckon. Lane conveniently had a meeting scheduled with the owner of Second Stre

Eagle Point-based Monster X Tours' performance sold out, but tickets were apparently still dispensed even after Compton Arena's 3,200-seat capacity was reached. Reports of fans skirting the gates and jumping fences prompted Jackson County Sheriff's deputies and Central Point police to respond. "It was
