WASHINGTON (AP) — In a clash along a polarized nation’s political and cultural fault lines, the Senate Judiciary Committee began its historic hearing Thursday in which Brett Kavanaugh hoped to salvage his Supreme Court nomination by fending off allegations by Christine Blasey Ford that he’d molested her when both were in high school. Ford sat impassively at the witness table as committee chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa began his opening remarks, defending the Republicans’ handling of the confirm

Two candidates running for Medford City Council in the Nov. 6 election failed to get their names in the Jackson County Voters’ Pamphlet, a critical blunder that could damage their campaigns. In the Ward 1 race in northeast Medford, missing information on one of the four candidates — David Dobrin — could give an edge to opponent Curt Ankerberg, a CPA who committed tax fraud in 2012-14 and makes expletive-laden, misogynistic and homophobic posts on social media . A house fire reported Tuesday at 520 Fordyce St. was quickly put out by Ashland Fire & Rescue, only to roar back to life in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Even before the second fire, it was pretty well scorched and uninhabitable, Battalion Chief Kelly Burns said Tuesday afternoon, despite the fact that, from the street, the house looked almost normal. The Tuesday fire was called in at 12:35 p.m. and started outside the rear of house and did much of its damage there, he said. Owners Monty

A livestock guardian dog was attacked and killed Monday by wolves southeast of Prospect in an area frequented by gray wolf OR-7 and his Rogue Pack, authorities say. The dog’s death is the first blamed on the Rogue Pack since two calves were killed days apart in January at a ranch in the Butte Falls area within the pack’s home environs. In the early-morning hours Monday, a livestock owner was awakened by the sound of his Tibetan mastiff that was guarding livestock in a fenced pasture about 400 ya

A shift in the wind and an abrupt spike in temperatures this week are bringing smoke back to Medford skies. Harkening back to the height of summer, Table Rocks disappeared from view in downtown Medford Thursday; Roxy Ann Peak, too, was hidden behind a veil of brown haze. “I’m included in all this,” said Marc Spilsby, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Medford. “Everybody’s getting sick of it.” Spilsby said a combination of wind and high temperatures is responsible for the smoke,

If there’s one thing that is noticeable when talking with Mason Walker, chief executive of East Fork Cultivars, a CBD-focused grow in Takilma, it’s his transparency. The level at which he explains things — whether about the company’s cultivation techniques, business practices, philosophies or opinions about the cannabis industry in general — is clear, concise and earnest. He answers questions willingly; this could be because of his seven-year stint at the Portland Business Journal, or maybe it’s

What may be the largest return in decades of wild fall chinook salmon to Bear Creek will get a helping hand through Medford, where a combination of drought and concrete fish barriers threaten to bog them down in downtown. State fish biologists used sandbags Tuesday to control creek flow over an abandoned sewer pipe and concrete cover exposed by erosion under Jackson Street bridge and built a fish ladder with sand bags and rocks to help boost fish over the 4-foot-tall barrier. The punishment all but completed the dizzying, late-in-life fall for the comedian, former TV star and breaker of racial barriers. “It is time for justice. Mr. Cosby, this has all circled back to you.
