Artists on Monday put the finishing touches on a giant mural portraying the four seasons on the outside wall of the Ashland Emergency Food Bank. The 52-by-18-foot mural, funded by local philanthropists and done in ordinary acrylic housepaint, portrays the changing seasons and the planting and harvesting of food in Ashland. An editorial on the front page is a departure for this newspaper, but the Mail Tribune Editorial Board believes the wildfire smoke that has plagued our valley in recent summers is the biggest threat to our economy and the livability of Southern Oregon that we have ever seen. We want to change that. We don’t pretend to have all the answers, nor do we think there is one magic solution that will bring a sudden end to the smoke. But we call on the vested interests on all sides of the forest manageme

The family of 33-year-old Matthew Graves say they understood his struggles with mental illness, but they have no idea why Eagle Point police shot him to death. Graves heard voices in his head, had conversations with himself, eschewed electronics and lived a life of household chores followed by long walks to restaurants, according to his older sister Laurie Bentson, 47, of Scottsdale, Arizona, who said his family never knew him as dangerous. If Graves had a weapon leading up to the shooting Wedne

So, there’s this new TV series on CBS that features a small team of good-deed-doers who receive cryptic messages and, in following the instructions, find themselves in a position to change the lives of those they encounter. Given the current wave of old shows becoming new again, my first thought was likely similar to what might have crossed your mind … … they’re rebooting “Person of Interest”? Well, we’d be wrong. The messages in this new series aren’t coming from a mysterious computer system de

GALICE — After other members of Brandon Lake’s rafting party paddled through an alternate route around the Rogue River’s Rainie Falls, Lake opted to take a stand. With feet steady and his helmet cinched tightly, Lake paddled his stand-up paddleboard into the teeth of Rainie Falls hoping to conquer by far the toughest plunge the Wild Rogue has to offer. Halfway through the 10-foot drop, the falls’ explosive hydraulics separated man from board, spitting Lake downriver while an adjacent eddy swallo

As I hiked the remote Friendship Ridge Trail in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park before Labor Day, I was thinking about the fact that while redwoods can be more than 300 feet tall, they have very shallow root systems. The reason they can withstand strong winds or floods is that the roots of many trees in a grove are intertwined. They are like many communities in nature, I thought — they are stronger together. My thoughts were interrupted by seeing fresh elk scat along the trail. This put me on

It's been a decade since 8-year-old Derrick Engebretson disappeared in the woods near Klamath Falls while Christmas tree hunting with his family. Police hope another 10 years won't go by before closure is brought to Lori and Robert Engebretson, who continue to hold onto a shred of hope their son made it off Pelican Butte alive that night. "We don't know anymore," Lori Engebretson said. "For a while I thought maybe we would find him on the mountain. We also wonder if someone may have taken him."

North Medford was on the verge of a 3-0 start and a victory in its home opener. Then Bend intervened. The Lava Bears scored an overtime touchdown and added a two-point conversion for the winning margin in a 29-28 nonconference game Friday at Spiegelberg Stadium. The Black Tornado, which last won its first three games in 2016, survived a short missed field goal by Bend at the end of regulation, leaving the score 21-21, then had possession first in the Kansas Plan overtime and made the most of it.
