Here’s all you need to know about the new Avengers movie: It’s also a Guardians of the Galaxy movie; Dr. Strange, who is on neither team, is on board; Ant-Man and Hawkeye are no-shows; it’s as packed with action as it is with one-liners and argumentative bantering — most of it funny, some of it silly; the bad guy is Thanos, played with dramatic flair by Josh Brolin; Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are planning or at least talking about their wedding; if you manage to coll

There’s more to making a documentary than simply turning on the camera and following your subject around hoping his — or her — charisma will carry you through. It’s a rule that eludes documentarian Alison Chernick in “Itzhak,” her meandering, shapeless profile of violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman. His infectious personality does carry the film — for a while. But the mind starts to wander when repetition — we see him receiving awards from vario

You’d never know the moody neo-noir character drama “Thoroughbreds,” about two privileged Connecticut teens cooking up a murder-for-hire, is writer-director Cory Finley’s feature debut. Its gait is one of skill and assurance, racing to the big screen after finishing in the money at Sundance last year. It’s one of the few buzzworthy indies emerging from the festival circuit that actually pays off. The success of “Thoroughbreds” is largely to do wit

Every teacher has a unique worldview. In the Crater Performing Arts Theater Thursday morning, Jenifer Knippel assumed the worldview of a unicorn as she took nearly 500 Central Point elementary students on a virtual trip around the world in "The Magic Cape Show." "Here we are in Israel!" she said to her companion onstage, Ashland sixth-grader Emma Johnston, after they had spun in place and left Sweden behind. Emma's magic cape, the inspiration for the play's title, had transported the pair there.

On what might have been an otherwise ordinary Saturday morning at the Central Point library, a hint of magic filled the air. More than 70 would-be wizards created finger-knitted scarves, crafted their own wands and filled out a questionnaire to determine which house the revered “sorting hat” would decide they should belong to. At the first installment of the Harry Potter Club at the Central Point library, the morning turnout was more lively than the rowdiest of Quidditch matches. N

On a June vacation to Brookings, Jesse Hodges had no idea he had stumbled into the birders' jackpot at the end of a pier. Vast swaths of anchovies had moved en masse into the Chetco River estuary. and so did large flocks of brown pelicans moving in for the free meal. "It was chaos," Hodges says. "Pelicans were everywhere.  I had my camera ready to take pictures of birds." Out of the chaos, Hodges' lens captured a brown pelican seemingly floating above the sea, with the sun's last rays bounc

An Ashland man is turning heads with a small, standup scooter. With a 100-watt solar panel bolted to its handle bars, the energy to power the scooter comes directly from the sun and will briefly store in the scooter's battery. It’s called the solarrolla, and inventor and inveterate tinkerer Brett Cameron Belan put it together in his Ashland shop in a couple weeks, using a drill, chop saw and a bag of bolts. On a hot, clear day, it fully charges even while he's riding it. On a cloudy day,

ASHLAND — If you’re a famous drummer, how do you turn drumming into an art form that people can buy, collect and hang on their wall? Ashlander Steve Smith, who was the drummer with the famed '70s-'80s rock group Journey (and still does the occasional tour with them), creates “art” by drumming for 10 or 20 seconds with lighted drumsticks, recording it with time-lapse photography, making an impression of the resulting image on canvas and signing it for fans and collecto

'She Loves Me' Director Valerie Rachelle nicely teases out the old world elegance of pre-war Budapest, and keeps her focus on romance and society, in Oregon Cabaret Theatre's production of "She Loves Me." Go-kart fans have a new place to rumble. Occupying a 70,000-square-foot warehouse off Rossanley that once belonged to Motorcycle USA, the new Rogue Karting is the largest indoor raceway between Seattle and Sacramento, says General Manager Tony Workman. Rogue Karting, which opened Jan. 8 at 2065 Lars Way, is more than twice the size of the former GoKart Hero, an attraction geared toward adult racers that closed in January 2016. GoKart Hero covered 30,000 square feet, said Workman, its former

Midge Raymond’s fascination with penguins began long before a 2004 expedition to Antarctica, where she was able to observe the seabirds in the wild — up close and personal. The trip “to the bottom of the Earth,” the Ashland resident says, only deepened her love. The “otherworldly landscape” of Antarctica and the “adorable, irresistible” tuxedo-clad sentinels of climate change inspired her as both a writer and an environmentalist, she adds.

TRAIL — When Jack Patterson needs respite from the wintery Rogue Valley, he heads to the land of the rising rainbow. The impounded stretch of the Rogue River between Lost Creek dam and Cole Rivers Hatchery, dubbed by its trout-fishing disciples as the "Holy Water," is mostly hallowed for its July salmon-fly hatch and other bug hatches during the year. But Patterson wants none of that. "I don't fish it in the summer," Patterson says. "Never have. Too crowded." Instead he loads up his fly b

Coordinators of the project say they won’t stop until the replica is built in Medford so veterans and their loved ones can visit, seek out names of friends and family and pay their respects. Sky-watchers are crossing their fingers, setting their alarms, and hoping for clear skies early Wednesday morning, when a super moon, a blood moon, a lunar eclipse and a blue moon will happen all at once. And if the weather cooperates, Southern Oregon should be a good place to view the events. “For the (continental) U.S., the viewing will be best in the West,” said Gordon Johnston, program executive and lunar blogger at NASA Headquarters in Washington, in a statement from NASA. &#x
