I was reading the Wikipedia entry on Roxy Ann Peak the other day and saw the section on Prescott Park. It said the Lions Club donated 200 acres of their land to the city. What was the reasoning for this, and why haven't I ever heard about it before? — D.M., Medford Be careful about reading Wikipedia, D.M. You know, those online sources can't always be trusted for accuracy. There's a fairly simple reason why you may not have heard about this land deal — it's old news. The park that wo

A fast-moving wildfire in east Medford has closed road and knocked out power, leaving traffic in a tangle, officials said. Medford police have asked people to avoid the North Foothill Road between East McAndrews and Hillcrest roads. Gawkers clogged roads looking for a view of the leaping flames that sent a broad plume of smoke skyward. Firefighters said the fire had raced to the top of Roxy Ann Peak, but hadn't entered the city park. As the fire raced north, the Jackson County Sheriff's Departme

Firefighters completed a line around the 633-acre Deer Ridge fire in Medford's east hills Monday night, while a 153-acre fire in the south Ashland foothills was contained. “There’s not much going on right now, at least nothing bad,” said Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Brian Ballou this morning. “We had people out there all night completing the fire line, and today we’ll lay in hoses on the Deer Ridge fire.” No structures burned in the Deer Ridge fire

Since You Asked Where did the name Roxy Ann Peak come from? ' Alicia E., Medford That big chunk of sticky clay visible from much of the Rogue Valley but most prominent in Medford got its name from Roxy Ann Bowen, the wife of John Bowen. According to research by Jeff LaLande cited in Oregon Geographic Names by Lewis A. and Lewis L. McArthur, the Bowens settled near the base of the peak in the 1850s. And the way it works generally is, if you own it, you name it. If the name sticks, it sticks. Like

Trout No. 1748 is sporting some bling and working for Da Man to help settle the question of whether the Rogue River's Holy Water lives up to its name or is simply a pit-stop in purgatory before trout get flushed downriver. This 16-inch trout with an orange, numbered, spaghetti-like tag attached to its dorsal fin is one of 400 tagged trout released into the Rogue's fly-fishing only section between Lost Creek dam and Cole Rivers Hatchery as part of a new study to determine what rainbows do when th

When the big one shakes the Rogue Valley, a new early-detection sensor on Roxy Ann should help give residents more advanced notice to drop, cover and hold on. "Even if you get only 30 seconds while you're riding a bike near downtown Medford along the pathway, that would give you enough time to get away from the viaduct," said Leland O'Driscoll, University of Oregon seismic network manager. The university, in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the Universit

The page has turned on one of the Rogue Valley's historic landmarks. The Carpenter family built a mansion known as Topsides on 47 acres above Old Stage Road during the Roaring '20s. Most recently it was owned by heirs of the last territorial governor of Alaska, Mike Stepovich. Now it belongs to a retired Midwest hog farmer. Ed and Susan Walk of Cumberland County, Illinois, acquired the one-time showplace for $1.541 million last month after viewing several local properties with their daughter Kri

ASHLAND — Mountain bikers who maintain the adage that kids don't climb need to meet Johnno Forsyth. Just the other day this 9-year-old Ashland boy went on a 15-mile ride in the Ashland Watershed that included a 3,000-foot climb, and with none other than 20-year mountain-biking pro Nathan Riddle of Ashland. "With no whining," Riddle says. "Not at all. That kid's a trooper. He's really into it." Johnno is likely to turn heads Saturday when he competes against riders twice his age and fo

ASHLAND — For decades, hikers looking for a little burn in their thighs have walked a makeshift trail from the Mt. Ashland Ski Area lodge to the top of the mountain, earning panoramic views for going rogue. It's a locals thing because the trail is not only missing from Mount Ashland maps, it's a path not supported or historically acknowledged by the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest as even being there. When the Ramsey Canyon conflagration roared to life north of Sams Valley on Aug. 22, firefighters hit it with everything they had. And they had a lot, thanks in part to fires already burning elsewhere in Southern Oregon. The fire, which erupted on the site of the 1994 Hull Mountain fire, had the potential to turn disastrous. It was burning in extremely rugged terrain and in an area with nearly 200 homes. The entire region had essentially been without rain since June 18, when .08 inches of precip

As Ashland junior running back DaMario Watson stood on the field, trying to catch his breath after the Grizzlies’ 2018 season opener, he was adamant that his team is very much a second-half kind of squad. His play was the prime example of that. Watson scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter and then had a huge interception — that would have been a pick-6 if not for an Ashland penalty — to set up another score as the Grizzlies claimed a 21-12 win over Willa
