LAKE CREEK — Mike Potts noses through a forest of old-growth Douglas firs bearded with lichens looking for little yellow specks poking through the duff when his eyes glimpse a yellowish-white fungus that appears to ooze out of a downed log. The mass of icicle-like spines protruding from the log are obviously not chanterelles, the most sought-after fall mushroom in the south Cascades. But this fistful of fungi turns out to be hericium. Some call it bear’s head. Potts calls it delicious. “They’re

“Evil Dead, the Musical” is a Halloween horror show that is a full-tilt, totally campy “Hairspray,” “Rocky Horror,” “Thriller,” “Chain Saw Massacre” mashup. Randall Theatre’s “Evil Dead” opened this weekend to a full and enthusiastic crowd that pelted popcorn and cackled wildly at every bad joke. As the lights go up for “Evil Dead” on the Randall’s new stage, five teens sing a happy mix of romance and vacation, dancing all the while. Life and love seem perfect, out in the forest where they’re br

Persistent exposure to wildfire smoke may be putting Rogue Valley residents at higher risk of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases — especially firefighters who are on the front lines battling blazes, according to Dr. Siva Marri. “The main long-term impact is when you’re exposed to smoke for a longer duration, that can put you at risk for having lung cancers and chronic lung problems,” said the local pulmonologist. However, Marri said smoking is still a much bigger risk factor for lung can

The roads are wide. The cars are slow. The coffee is terrible. The people are fat. The area is spacious. In-N-Out is good. Strangers are friendly. Crater Lake is beautiful. These are just a few of the observations made by exchange students from Alba in northwestern Italy after spending the last two weeks in the Rogue Valley. A group of 30 Italian students and two chaperones arrived in Medford Aug. 31 after spending three days in San Francisco. During their stay in Medford, the students were able

The shahtoosh shawl in Bonnie Yates' Ashland laboratory is so soft it makes cashmere feel like sandpaper. The small shawl is made from the hair of a Tibetan antelope, of which only a few thousand remain. It's illegal to trade or possess these shawls, which are coveted on the international black market of endangered-species trading. But Yates' shahtoosh is kept as a standard, a barometer for her work that includes comparing shahtooshes seized by wildlife agents across the world and taken to the U

Twelve addresses in west and east Medford neighborhoods are under an advisory to boil their water until further notice, according to the Medford Water Commission. The advisory comes after the installation of a new segment of pipe, which inadvertently depressurized the water main for Meadows Lane and Cherry Street, the agency said in a news release, and harmful bacteria could be in the supply for the dozen addresses. Addresses under the advisory include: • 1701, 1709, 1717, 1720, 1721, 1722, 1724

It was a horrible 20 minutes. On Saturday morning, Rabbi Avi Zwiebel was celebrating his usual Shabbat service at Chabad Synagogue on Siskiyou Boulevard in Ashland. As part of tradition, no one carries phones on that day. But a parishioner came in late and broke the news about an active shooter at a synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. “I was filled with fear such as I’ve never known,” said Zwiebel, whose daughter Baila, 16, was working in a synagogue in that neighborhood.

But it’s hard to overlook Rogue Credit Union’s $600 million auto loan portfolio, accounting for roughly half of organization’s lending. Ashland police shot at a cougar on the Southern Oregon University campus Sunday night but missed, and the cougar escaped, apparently unharmed, the department announced Monday. The incident — and other recent sightings — led to a decision Monday to allow shooting of any cougars seen in populated areas during the daytime, but only if authorized to fire by Ashland police Chief Tighe O’Meara. Police and university public safety officers responded Sunday after a pair of cougars were seen in the Hanno
