"The one attitude I've tried to change is focusing on giving yourself the moments with your children. You can't just assume you'll have time for it one day." Today I’m talking to Dr. Tali Lando in a very candid conversation about breast cancer. Dr. Lando is a full-time pediatric ENT surgeon. She is also a breast cancer survivor. But the year she was diagnosed with cancer was anything but easy. Months before, she delivered her third daughter, a little preemie. Then her dad was diagnosed with brai

On a borrowed board, his bare skin chilled in the water off Bastendorff Beach, Ollie Richardson caught the first wave that ever came his way. The 9-year-old had to share the surfboard — and later a wetsuit — with his older brother. But that moment of speed and adrenaline was entirely his. "I felt like I was going 100 miles an hour," Richardson says. "And since then I've wanted more and more and more." Twenty years ago, Richardson, his brother and their dad had beaches around Coos Bay

Hyatt and Howard Prairie lakes could become year-round fishing spots, and special rules for largemouth bass in Applegate Lake could disappear under new plans to simplify Oregon's often confusing and inconsistent trout and warmwater fishing rules. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is in the midst of revamping its regulations statewide with a big eye on simplification and consistency in order to take the guesswork out of figuring out what's open and what's legal out there. An internal rev

Aspen trees with shimmering golden leaves. Views of Cascades peaks such as Mount McLoughlin and Pelican Butte. Deer tracks along dried-out sections of Upper Klamath Lake. There’s much to see along two new trails that were completed earlier this year as part of the ever-expanding Spence Mountain trail system. Completed earlier this year, the Shoalwater and Old Eagle trails combine to make the 4-1/2 mile loop from the Shoalwater Bay Trailhead especially tempting with the seasonal display of showy

Massage, yoga, veganism, true wealth, science of mind, Ayurveda, alternative healing and other New Age subjects will be explored in booths, talks and sample sessions at Ashland’s first-ever Conscious Living Fair, set for Saturday at Ashland Hills Hotel. Because every other Ashlander seems to be a healer, teacher or energy worker of some sort, joked fair founder Kathi Kali, it’s surprising the town has never held a New Age “home show” in which people can get free samples and see what interests th

“Stranger Things” is a popular Netflix original series produced by 21 Laps Entertainment. It is directed by the Duffer Brothers (“Hidden,” “Wayward Pines”) and stars David Harbour and Winona Ryder. If you love the 1980s and all the culture of that time, “Stranger Things” is worth a watch. Movies like “E.T.,” “Poltergeist” and “The Gate” that captured viewers’ imaginations and carry childhood memories are clearly major influences for this popular Web series. Ryder is highly believable as a distra

EUGENE -- Windy Dean didn't have high expectations heading into the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday at Hayward Field. This has been a tough year for the former Roseburg High and Southern Methodist University standout. First, she had a falling out with SMU coach Dave Wollman. And then she learned two weeks ago that she has a torn rotator cuff in her right shoulder. The injury kept Dean from competing in the javelin, in which she was a three-time NCAA champion for SMU. But it di

WASHINGTON (AP) — The mail-bomb scare widened Thursday as law enforcement officials seized three more suspicious packages — two addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden and one to actor Robert De Niro — and said they were similar to crude pipe bombs sent to former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and CNN. None of the devices exploded, and no one was injured. But the packages, sent to prominent Democrats critical of President Donald Trump, heightened nationwide tensions and fears two w

Oregon state Sen. Herman Baertschiger, Jr. says the West has an epidemic of trees, and he criticized the U.S. Forest Service for its handling of wildfires that left Southern Oregon choking in smoke two summers in a row. “I call it the ‘epidemic of trees.’ We have way too many trees per acre,” he said. Baertschiger, R-Grants Pass, said the Forest Service doesn’t get enough funding from Congress for fuels-reduction projects, so instead of aggressively fighting summer wildfires, the federal agency

In the end, it was obvious. “To Kill A Mockingbird,” Harper Lee’s seminal coming-of-age story about racial injustice and the willingness of one man to stand for principle against the weight of cultural oppression, received top honors Tuesday night at the conclusion of PBS’s summer competition to name “The Great American Read.” There’s a message in there, somewhere. To be sure, the series had a silly element from the start. No one seriously believed that “Fifty Shades of Grey” should be considere

Coming on the heels of the summer wildfire season that saw a record for unhealthy air days in Medford, the Forest Service is prepping for its winter burning season designed to reduce wildfire risk and intensity by swapping a little smoke now for less later. The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest announced plans Thursday to conduct low-intensity burns on more than 8,900 acres of piled brush and ground-level vegetation on days when weather and winds are least likely to create offensive smoke con

I am way behind in my gardening chores and didn't get my roses pruned yet. I was wondering whether it's too late to do so. Can I trim them back now? Or should I just let them go for this season? — Judy A., Central Point Judy! Judy! Judy! (Sorry. We couldn't resist the Cary Grant reference. We are that old.) By the way, did you know Grant didn't actually say that in a movie? Grant did say, "Susan, Susan, Susan" in "Bringing Up Baby." But we digress. Weeding our way back down the garden path

Following two rescue missions on Mount McLoughlin in the last week, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office search-and-rescue officials sent out a safety reminder Thursday for hikers. The change of seasons means unpredictable weather, colder nights and an earlier sunset. On Sunday, Oct. 21, a hiker called 911 at 8:30 p.m. to report a man in her party had become separated during their descent. The lost hiker had only 5 percent battery remaining on his cellphone, so he was able to call 911 just once. SAR

Voter interest in the upcoming election is running high in Jackson County, approaching levels typically seen in presidential cycles. “It’s definitely busier,” said Chris Walker, Jackson County clerk. “It just feels like there’s a lot more interest based on the calls from people. It almost feels like a presidential election year.” Walker said she expects the turnout to hit somewhere above 70 percent, still less than presidential elections, when it can reach up to 80 percent locally.
