ABSTRACT, Plan to Enhance Diversity (PED)
According to a survey by the Association of American Cancer Institutes and reported in The Cancer Letter, the
lack of diversity in senior leadership positions at NCI-designated cancer centers is a significant issue.
Interestingly, cancer centers led by women and/or underrepresented minority directors had the highest level of
diversity in leadership compared to cancer centers led by White men. These findings emphasize the importance
of creating a focused emphasis on diversity and inclusion as an essential first step that will ensure all voices and
perspectives will be included, heard, and represented throughout the entire organizational structure and mission
of the cancer center. The Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) Director, Dr. Kelvin
Lee, established the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in 2021, recognizing the moral imperative of
DEI in improving quality cancer education and research. Dr. Antwione Haywood was appointed Associate
Director for DEI and tasked with developing the IUSCCC Plan to Enhance Diversity (PED). Although DEI is a
major focus in two other IUSCCC areas—the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement and Cancer
Research Training and Education Coordination— initiative the DEI office drives recruitment, retention, leadership
development, and cultural climate transformation among the IUSCCC membership, students/trainees, staff, and
advisory entities. Consistent with the 2023-2028 IUSCCC Strategic Plan, the PED's overarching strategy is to
advance a culture of Inclusive Excellence throughout our cancer center. The aims of this work center around
achieving and maintaining a more diverse and inclusive workforce, leveraging current resources towards building
DEI learning tools and capacity, and creating a sustainable infrastructure that promotes and invests in the long-
term success of our members and IUSCCC as a whole. Our efforts will ensure that IUSCCC enhances diversity
in leadership, climate, and advisory boards and that our workforce best reflects the diversity goals set by IUSCCC
and corroborated through community partnerships.
