As part of this project, the Protein Chemistry and Molecular Biology Section (PCMBS) has continued to discover new bioactive proteins including three new members of the reciting class of anti-cancer proteins and one new anti-SARS-CoV-2 and anti-his lectin, Dm-CVNH, a homolog of the protein cyanovirin-N. The protein cyanovirin-n itself was shown to have potent anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity and was shown tone active in animal studies. The protein Q-griffithsin, and oxidation resistant analog of the protein griffithsin, patented by the NCI, was found to be safe in Phase I clinical trials with a publication expected shortly. A new pre-fractionated marine aqueous extract was created by the Natural Products Branch based on methods developed in the PCMBS. This library, which will eventually number ~100,000 fractions, was found to be rich in potential biotherapeutics with numerous proteins and peptides showing biological activities. This library will be a key resource for the PCMBS moving forward.
