Role of lymphopenia and inflammation in COVID-19 pathogenesis

Principal Investigator: Irini Sereti Organization: NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES Fiscal Year: 2024 Award: $162,051 Funding agency: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases In order to evaluate the pathogenesis of COVID with a focus on lymphopenia, inflammation and coagulopathy, we have opened a protocol to obtain clinical samples (peripheral blood mononuclear cells, serum and plasma, nasal swabs) from people with active COVID-19 disease. In addition, recovered patients may enroll and have a similar sample collection for comparison purposes. In addition, we are interested in how immunocompromised patients may be responding to COVID-19 vaccines by assessing people T-cell and antibody responses.
