• Construct sidewalks as part of roadway improvem ent projects • Add new sidewalks along existing arterial and m ajor collector streets • Overcom e barriers to pedestrian circulation • Identify future opportunities for m ulti-use paths • Provide and im prove access to schools and m ajor transit stops • Implem ent safety and operational street im provem ents that benefit pedestrians • General im provem ents to enhance the pedestrian environm ent • Maintain the pedestrian circulation sy stem These projects are further discussed in the paragraphs below. Construct Sidew alks as Part of Roadw ay Improvements A num ber of pedestrian facility improvem ents will be constructed as part of the street im provem ents (including new construction and str eet reconstruction projects) that are described in Chapter 5 and illustrated in Figure F-1. In addition to the percent of arterial and collector streets that currently have sidewalks, the plan/program med im provem ents iden tified in Figure F-1will cover another 25 percent, bringing the total to about 80 percent of arterials and collectors containing som e form of pedestrian amenities. 100 percent coverage of these streets would contribute to an ideal pedestrian environm ent, but this m ay not be entirely possible due to the same sorts of lim itations that m ay be experienced in retrofitting bicy cle im provem ents such as lack of right-of-way , built or natural environm ental impacts, extraordinarily high construction costs or other factors. Add New Sidew alks Along Existing Ar terial and Major Collector Streets Beyond the sidewalk im provem ents that will be construc ted as part of a street im provem ent project, other improvem ents will be m ade by adding sidewalks to the existing street system . The improvem ents are concentrated on Medford’ s arterial and major collector streets. The im provem ents are intended to address the strategic approach to providing improved pedestrian circulation in Medford that was discussed in the section on “Strategies”. They are also intended to m eet State, County and local goals and requirem ents also discussed earlier in this chapter under “Policy Context and Background”. Figure 10-3 illustrates the physical improvem ents, and Table 10-11 provides a detailed list of the sam e projects. If fully implem ented, the pedestrian facilities will result in a coverage of 93 percent of Medford’s arterial and collector street sy stem .
