Dear=Mr. Aldhous,
Adam Isaak resigned because I had a public spat with his =irlfriend, Rebecca
Watson, who had issued a public call for CFI =mployees to quit. (That dispute is a whole other story, tangential to =our
Krauss piece, so I will not get into it here.)
Timing is important =ere. The email from Pat was in March. The dispute with
Watson started =n mid-May, after which Adam stopped showing up for work. (He said he =as sick & then went on
vacation, or vice versa). He then then left =ome time in June. If the Krauss matter "pushed [him] over the edge," =hen he
was tenaciously hanging on to the ledge for a few =onths.
The =mail from Pat Beauchamp was in the first person and Pat indicated she =as
speaking for herself. (I found the email exchange last night; I will =orward it to you.) Adam had never been shy about
expressing his =oncerns to me -- he asked for raises, complained about the hosts on the =odcast he was producing etc.
The notion that he and Pat were working =ogether but that he decided he could not reveal his participation is =ifficult to
credit.
I will be traveling to my home this evening. Plan to reach my =ome by 7:45, but

Dear Mr. =ldhous,
Let me note a couple of =hings at the outset. First, I would be happy to speak to
you regarding =he allegations in your email. You can reach me at my cell phone number, =hich is
However, I am unavailable tomorrow (Monday) =ecause of prior commitments until approximately 7:45 =M.
Next, you should know that ='m not an employee of CFI nor do I have any
authority to speak =n behalf of CFI. I'm writing to you from my personal email =ccount in part to underscore that point. I
do retain a CFI email =ddress in part as a courtesy to me and in part because it serves a =usiness purpose (for example, I
still receive occasional emails =ddressed to the president of the organization).
Turning to the substance of your allegations, first you should be aware that I
take the issue of sexual harassment very =eriously. This is confirmed by the fact that after I was hired by CFI =s its in-
house lawyer (a position I held prior to becoming president =nd CEO) I insisted that the organization adopt a
comprehensive =ero-tolerance harassment policy covering workplace harassment. =oreover, during the time I was
president and CEO we had three separate =tate trainings for the entire staff on sexual harassment issues. In =ddition,
where necessary, we did not hesitate to expend significant =esources, including retaining outside investigators, to
conduct =erious, detailed inquiries into harassment claims. One such inquiry =ost the organization over $40,000.
Therefore, any suggestion that I do =ot personally take harassment claims seriously is amply disconfirmed by =y record.
Regarding the alleged =ncident on the 2011 cruise, the first I became aware of it
was when Pat =eauchamp, CFI's business manager and the employee responsible =or cruise logistics, wrote to me in
2013 indicating she objected to =nviting Lawrence Krauss on our upcoming Galapagos cruise. I found this =trange, and I
responded to her almost immediately asking the reasons =or her objection. She gave two reasons. The first was that
Krauss did =ot pay sufficient attention to the guests on the 2011 cruise. I had =eard this concern from one guest myself;
on the other hand, I also =eard from several guests that they thought Krauss's =resentations were excellent and a
highlight of the cruise. Accordingly, = did not give this concern much weight.
The second reason was that Krauss had allegedly asked a =emale guest on the
cruise to join him and his partner, apparently for =ome sort of sexual activity (I cannot recall whether Krauss was
engaged =r married or just seriously involved with his female companion at the =ime, although they were clearly
romantically involved and seemed very =uch in love). This is the first I had heard of this proposition. No =omplaint by the
guest or anyone else had been made to me at the time of =he cruise, although I was on the cruise and clearly visible
throughout =he cruise.
5
EFTA_R1_01655758
EFTA02519525
I asked Ms. Beauchamp for =ontact information for this guest. I did call the
guest and she =ubstantially confirmed what Ms. Beauchamp had said. I apologized on =ehalf of the organization. The
guest indicated although she was taken =back by Krauss's proposition at the time, she did not want to =ursue the matter
further. I then got in contact with Krauss. Krauss =enied the allegation. In light of the guest's reluctance to =ursue the
matter and Krauss's own denial and, importantly, =ecause between the time of the 2011 cruise and the Galapagos cruise
we =ad instituted a policy regarding harassment at any CFI event, which covers not =ust employees, but speakers and
attendees, I decided to go ahead with =y plan and have Krauss as a speaker on the Galapagos cruise. Krauss was =ully
aware of our harassment policy regarding CFI events because we had =ad a discussion about it. Therefore, I expected
him to comply with that =olicy on the Galapagos cruise. As far as I know he did, because we =eceived no complaints
about his conduct. Nor have we received any =omplaints about his conduct at other events.
let me just take a moment to highlight the 2012 policy, which =ou can find in
full here,
http://www.centerforinquiry.net/blogs/entry/cfis_new_policy_on_hostile_conduct_harassment_at_conferences/
along with the announcement = made explaining the rationale for the policy. This policy was, =ertainly at its time,
arguably the strongest any nonprofit organization =ad regarding conduct at its events. Again, this policy shows that any
=uggestion that CFI, as an organization, or that I personally took a lax =ttitude regarding harassment is completely
without factual =oundation.
In your email you mentioned =hat one staffer resigned after I invited Krauss on
the Galapagos =ruise. I'm not aware of any staffer resigning because of that. =f you give me a name I could comment on
the reasons for the staffer =eaving. Ms. Beauchamp remained an employee of CFI (and went on the =alapagos cruise
with Krauss).
You mentioned =lso the comments that were made to me in March 2012 by
Melody Hensley. =et me give you the background for that. CFI was holding an event prior =o the 2012 Reason Rally in
DC. Richard Dawkins, Jessica Alquist, Jamie =askin, and Lawrence Krauss were scheduled to speak at the event. Melody
=ensley was heavily involved in the planning for the event and in fact =as tapped to make introductions for the speakers,
including Krauss. (At =he time she was in charge of the DC local branch.) During the planning =or the event she gave no
indication whatsoever that she had any =esitation about introducing or dealing with Krauss. (I will forward you =ome
email correspondence confirming this.)
As I recall, Krauss's schedule resulted in his =fanned arrival being a little later
than the others. As it turned out, =e was even further delayed. At some point when it became clear that =rauss was
going to be late, Hensley turned to me and said, "I =now why Krauss isn't coming; he's embarrassed to see =e." I asked
Hensley what she meant by this. She said Krauss had =ade a pass at her several years earlier and she had rebuffed him. I
=sked for some details. She said she was in a hotel room with him (I =an't recall whether she said it was Krauss's hotel
=oom, but I think it was), and that Krauss tried to kiss her. She pushed =im away and said she wasn't interested. I asked
if Krauss =ersisted; she said he did not. Thinking out loud, I believe I said =omething to the effect of 'well, if you want to
make a =omplaint you probably can, although I'm not sure our policy at =hat time would cover that.' Ms. Hensley said
she was not =nterested in making a formal complaint.
Ms. Hensley's statement that I "responded to =er with silence" is absolutely
false and I categorically and =nqualifiedly deny it. We talked about her concern, as indicated. Ms. =ensley's recall must
be failing her.
Given the passage of time (six years), the fact that Hensley =id not want to
pursue the matter, the fact that Krauss desisted when =ensley indicated she wasn't interested, the fact that Hensley
=idn't even seem very bothered by the incident (as indicated, =he had expressed no hesitation in seeing Krauss), and the
fact that we =ad no policy covering conduct by nonemployees back in 2006 (in fact, =FI's zero-tolerance policy covering
employees themselves was =ot implemented until 2007, I believe -- I was just hired as the =ttorney in July 2006), I
decided not to do any further about this =articular incident. However, the incident, along with observations I =eard at
6
EFTA_R1_01655759

the Women in Secularism conference which we held later in the =pring of 2012 (observations which did not mention
Krauss, but rather =ome speakers at non-CFI events), was a factor in my thinking about the =eed for a policy covering
conduct by invited speakers and guests at CFI =onferences.
Ms. Hensley made no other =omplaint to me about Krauss, nor did she ever
express to me her belief =hat we should not invite Krauss to events.
In closing, let me state that any accusations stating that I =eglected to take
harassment complaints seriously are false. =urthermore, I would regard them as a malicious attack on my character =nd
my professional reputation.

Ronald A. =indsay

Mr. =indsay:
I'm a reporter for BuzzFeed News who =as been investigating sexual misconduct
The story concerns Krauss's actions =owards students while a professor of
physics at Case Western Reserve =niversity, as well as his conduct in non-academic settings as a =rominent figure in the
skeptics movement. I am reporting this story =long with two of my colleagues on the science desk, Azeen Ghorayshi and
=irginia Hughes.
7
EFTA_R1_01655760
EFTA02519527
Our story is about several allegations of =exual misconduct dating from 2006 to
2016. Our reporting also goes into =ow the various institutions Krauss has been affiliated with — =ase Western, Arizona
State University, the Australian National =niversity, the New College of the Humanities and the Center for =nquiry, for
which you formerly served as president — have =andled complaints and concerns about his behavior during this time.
=/span>
Our story is =orroborated by emails, university documents, official complaints,
=estimony from victims and witnesses, and interviews with more than two =ozen of Krauss's current and former
academic colleagues, =tudents, and peers in the skeptics movement.
I am writing to you =ow because you are personally named in the story, and
because you had =xecutive responsibility for CFI's actions during the time of =ome of the alleged incidents.
I wanted to offer you the =pportunity to comment and/or respond to the main
facts we plan to =ublish regarding your involvement as the former head of CFI during this =ime. If you wish to comment
on any of these findings, we need to hear =rom you as soon as possible. We are planning on =ublishing our story
Tuesday morning US Eastern Time.
Based on our =eporting so far, this is what we plan to publish that concerns =ou:
One incident involving Krauss =llegedly occurred in May 2011 on a CFI
=ruise.
Attendees had =/span>paid several thousand dollars to join a cultural
=our of the Greek islands, featuring lectures from scientists and =riters, including Krauss.
Krauss allegedly =ropositioned a female cruise-goer, who rejected an
invitation to join =im and his female companion for sex in their cabin. =/span>
No complaint was made, but =he incident was reported to a CFI staffer
at the time. =/span>
CFI's leadership =ontinued to embrace Krauss, making =im an honorary
member of its =oard of directors in December 2011.
But at least two =taffers were sufficiently concerned about reports of
Krauss's =ehavior that they urged you not to invite him on a 2014 cruise of the Galapagos Islands. =/span>
In June 2013, after you =ejected their advice and invited him on the
cruise, one of those =taffers resigned.
At a conference in March =012, another woman, who at that point was
also an employee of CFI, told =ou about an incident in 2006 in which Krauss forcibly kissed and groped =er in a hotel
room. According to this woman, after she told you about =his in person, you responded to her with silence.
•
The woman later =old two other employees in CFI's management about
the incident, =nd expressed her discomfort at having Krauss continue to speak at =vents.
CFI continued to book Krauss =s a speaker at its events.
