to Coke County in 1901 and settled on a ram near Lronte.
r. Peroiful says: "ILy dad was a farmer, but always
kept a few heed of horses and other stook on the place.
I learned to work wattle some and especially to help at
rc,uld-up time whcn the neighboring renohes would put on
extra help, ihey'd usually make um boys hold the mite
while the older hands rounded up and did the brending and
most of the hard riding. I never got in many scrapes like
sone youngsters I've heard of, but I did get a few bumps.
I remernber two or three of us boys was tryin' to ride a

young horse. I guess I was fifteen or sixteen years old.
We drew straws to see which wculd ride him first. I got
the shortest onC so I climbed on him. It wosn't no time,
though, 'ti]. I was sittint on the grounds and the other
boys v ivrin' all the full, laughit at me.

cattle in 1917 and milt out to the 1;ecoa, confident that
we was coin' to -eke our fortune. Ho joined the navy after
