China leads the global path
towards an “electric economy”
Electricity now covers more than 35% of energy use
in buildings, 30% in industry and 4% in transport
(see Figure 10). With over 12 million charging stations and the largest global market for electric
vehicles, China has become the world leader for
transport electrification.35 As a result, China now
matches or surpasses Europe in each of these
sectors and Chinese national emissions fell for the
first time in 2025, even as economic activity and
energy demand continued to rise.36,37
