More than 90 people attended the show to see 27 original designs by Inanna and Lisa as well as 11 outfits donated by local businesses. They were modeled by fellow students with music by Paul Clay. Desserts were donated by several Ashland restaurants. Ticket sales generated $462 dollars that were given, with the outfits, to the Dunn House, a local shelter for abused women. Inanna and I would like to thank all the businesses that helped make this event a success: Oh Behave, Thread Hysteria, Avant Garb, Inti Imports, Nimbus, Rare Earth, Red Threads, Flowertyme, Bloomsbury Books, Apple Cellar, Standing Stone Brewing Co., Plaza Cafe, Geppetto's, Printfast, Carpet Mart, b.Ella, Alex's, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Looking Glass Beads, Shop n' Kart and Martina Triester. Lisa Chung Ashland Abuse isn't part of the plan We were outraged by the recently exposed images of torture at Abu Ghraib, as were many of our friends and neighbors. We were also astonished to learn these acts were preventable, when the Washington Post revealed that Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, had been resisting entreaties from the Red Cross to improve conditions in Iraqi prisons for months. Surely, this isn't how our president envisioned bringing peace and democracy to Iraq. Yet, he refuses to hold Rumsfeld or anyone in his administration accountable. Sadly, such refusals have been a pattern for him. He has also held no one accountable (including himself) for misleading the nation about Iraq's nonexistent weapons of mass destruction, for declaring "Mission accomplished" well before the job was finished in Iraq, or for failing to act on intelligence received prior to 9/11 - to name a few. Oddly enough, "The only people who've been pushed aside� are the truth-tellers who warned about policies on taxes (Paul O'Neill); war costs (Larry Lindsey); occupation troop levels (Gen. Eric Shinseki); and how Iraq would divert from catching � Osama (Richard Clarke)." (New York Times, May 8) After all this, we find it nearly impossible to understand how people continue to trust the judgement of this administration. We urge fellow Americans to not be complacent about those who are governing our country - seek out the truth about their dealings through multiple news sources, and then vote this fall. What's happening in Washington is seriously effecting our future - and your vote can make a difference! James and Rita Grauer Williams Is Israel the next Iraq? You've read the news that from President Bush, Israeli Prime Minister Sharon obtained support for his disengagement from the Gaza Strip. Did you know that part of the "president's letter of assurance" means "the United States will lead an international effort to build the capacity and will of the Palestinian institutions to fight terrorism and prevent the areas from which Israel withdraws from posing a threat." The above quotes are included in an article in the Washington Post National Weekly Edition of May 3-9, page 22, by Martin Indyk, director of Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. Strand Ashland Thanks for food donations On Saturday, May 8, the Letter Carriers Union of Ashland not only collected and delivered the mail throughout Ashland; they also took the time to collect 21,400 pounds of donated canned food along the way. The Ashland Emergency Food Bank wishes to extend a big thank you to all the Letter Carriers involved with the food drive and to the community for their generous support. AEFB also wishes to thank the many volunteers who assisted in sorting and transporting the donations to our storage units. We are indeed grateful. The only omission was a call for impeachment, but then only elected officials are liable for this.
