Tommy Ahlstrom had a double, a triple and three RBIs as North Eugene overcame a slow start to beat Ashland 11-6 in MWL baseball action Tuesday at North Mountain Park. The Grizzlies, who have gone 2-8 since opening league play 6-0, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added two in the third to get within 5-4, but the visiting Highlanders didn’t let up and left Ashland with another clutch road win — their fifth in conference play. Steen Fredrickson went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Jerry Carroll 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Nick Sanderson 1-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Grizzlies (13-9, 8-8), who wrap up league play with a doubleheader at North Eugene on Friday. Jose Perez added two hits for Ashland. The Grizzlies got the start they were after when Carroll and Sanderson both delivered run-scoring singles in the bottom of the first. After North Eugene answered with a big five-run second, the Grizzlies’ cut the lead to one on two more RBI singles by Perez and Tarquin Daley. But the Highlanders took advantage of three straight walks issued by sophomore pitcher Jesse Carroll to score four more runs in the fourth and cruised from there. “Sometimes, the sophomores have sophomore days,” Ashland coach Mike Kenask said. “(Jesse Carroll’s) a great pitcher and he’s going to have a great career, but he just couldn’t find the zone today.” Jesse Carroll allowed nine runs on seven hits while walking five. His counterpart, Jake Owens, surrendered six runs on 11 hits in a complete-game effort. He struck out three and walked two. Only the top four teams in the final MWL standings will host a play-in game May 22. The Grizzlies are battling the Crater Comets (8-13, 8-5) for the No. 4 spot and can greatly improve their chances with a sweep Friday. “We’ve been hitting the ball well the last couple weeks and we just need to combine hitting, fielding and pitching for seven innings all in the same game, and hopefully get a home play-in game for the playoffs,” Kenask said. “(Friday’s) huge. Girls Tennis At Roseburg, Ashland’s top two singles players came through with convincing wins but Roseburg dominated the rest of the nonleague dual at Roseburg High School. Ashland’s Ashley Knecht rolled in the No. 1 singles match, beating Claire Hittle 6-0, 6-0, and Vika O’Brien crushed Carissa Roman in the No. 2 singles match. SINGLES — Ashley Knecht, A, d. Track and Field The Ashland High boys won 10 of 16 events and freshman Lillianne Smith led the Ashland girls as the Grizzlies swept a dual at Raider Stadium on Tuesday. For the AHS boys, senior Wyatt Thompson-Siporen won the javelin (170 feet, 9 inches) and the pole vault (13-6) and placed second in the discus (154-4), while Shashi Penn won the 100-meter dash (11.55 seconds), was runner-up in the javelin (163-10) and third in the long jump (19-9). Dorian-Sky Hatcher won the 200 (23.77) and was second in the 100 (11.59). Smith won the discus (87-8) and placed second in the shot put (28-8 ½), while teammate Kelsey McKelvey, who has the third-best javelin throw in the state, won that event with a 123-4 heave.
