The entire community can be justifiably proud of that, but the celebration should be quick and the focus turned immediately toward making improvements in areas where results were lagging. Two areas in particular, math and science, call out for more emphasis — in Ashland as well as the state at large. Just over half of Ashland High School's juniors tested met the standard set by the state in math, while a paltry 11 percent of those same juniors met the standard in science. Those poor scores should be framed by the overall state averages, which were even worse, at 31.6 and 7.8 percent, respectively. We are firm believers in the value of a liberal arts education, but there is no question that the United States and its schools are trailing much of the industrialized world when it comes to the so-called STEM education — science, technology, engineering and math. With the massive advances in technology over the past two decades, those fields have become the driving forces in so many parts of our culture, from health care to transportation to construction, to name just a few. It's debatable whether Oregon's Smarter Balanced test is a good measure of students' learning. But there seems to be no question as to which areas need the most work. We are confident that Ashland's educators are up to the task.
