--> --> Schools remain open By Myles Murphy Ashland Daily Tidings Ashland school were open and running as usual this morning, as teachers attempted to help students deal with the East Coast terrorist attacks. "Re-establishing day-to-day normalcy is very important for the well-being of the students," Ashland School District Superintendent Juli Di Chiro said. Di Chiro took a whirlwind tour of every school in her district this morning, talking with school staff and helping set guidelines on how each school will deal with the events today. "Some parents have called in and don't feel comfortable sending their kids to school," Di Chiro said. "That's their choice." This is the second extremely stressful day in less than a week for Briscoe Elementary School, which had to deal with the death of student's family members in a plane wreck Wednesday. "We're especially concerned about Briscoe," Di Chiro said. Briscoe principal Jeff Schlecht confirmed it was a difficult time, but said his staff is handling it well, despite an experience of "reeling" this morning. "This staff and kids have been through so much emotion," he said. Schlecht met with staff early this morning to decide how to discuss the events with children of different ages. "That was the most important thing - that they know we are out of harm's way," Schlecht said. All Ashland elementary schools and the middle school decided to keep televisions and radios off and run classes in as regular a fashion as possible after speaking with students and answering what questions they could. "We're going to keep the routines and keep the structure to reassure the children," Schlecht said. Ashland High School - with its more mature student body - will have some television watching allowed in classrooms as teachers help students process the events, Di Chiro said. Email your...
