The $5.5 million plus that is to be spent for this project won't be available for other projects that serve more people and address real problems. It is your money! To become informed easily about this, check a map of Ashland. Notice how Nevada Street runs for a few blocks between dead ends on both sides of the creek. Nevada will never be a through street, nor is there a need for one, since both sides intersect with excellent routes into town. If you are still undecided, drive Nevada on the west side. In the minutes of the Ashland Transportation Commission, there are numerous references to increased pedestrian and bike safety and improved lighting and parking. Nothing about this bridge. This is simply a project that needs to be tabled, so the City Council and staff can focus on Ashland’s real transportation needs. If this project goes through it will be Ashland's very own bridge to nowhere! Marty Breon Ashland Make Oregon a leader After a summer of record heat and wildfires, it’s clearer than ever that we need real solutions to global warming that transition our state to clean energy. Luckily, there’s a proposal before the Legislature that would get our state off coal, double our state’s commitment to clean energy, and open up the door to community solar for people unable to put solar on their own roof. As a small-business owner, solar energy has the potential to save me money on my utility bills while also reducing my contribution to the problem. I imagine a future with solar panels on every home, on office buildings, atop local schools, and on local businesses across the state. To get to where we need to be, I strongly urge state leaders to act now to address this pressing problem and move Oregon towards a clean energy future. This pattern of new records year after year has been going on for a decade. Our science, 200 nations that met in Paris, even the Pope tell us it's time to act and that all must do our part. Oregon’s Healthy Climate Bill is essential to meeting our already established legislative goals on climate by providing the mechanisms by which to achieve them, and by doing our part regionally to both reduce GHG emissions, and transition in an orderly way to a sustainable economic model based on clean technologies. It’s critical that our Legislature act now in the short legislative session beginning Feb. 1. It will help consolidate with California, Washington State and others to have regional impact. Please speak up; encourage your representatives via letter and phone calls to enact it.
