Some movies with great potential are coming to theaters this spring. There’s something for every genre, whether you’re into tales of romance, friendship or the apocalypse. Here are eight action, science fiction, drama and comedy films to look forward to before the start of summer. ACTION: “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (May 1) Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth Plot: The Avengers must work together to put an end to Ultron, an artificial intelligence peacekeeping program that has gone haywire. Why it’s worth watching: What’s better than a superhero movie? A movie with multiple superheroes. Just like the last “Avengers,” this will be a fun, action-packed film that’s perfect for escaping everyday realities. “Mad Max: Fury Road” (May 15) Cast: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult Plot: George Miller’s fourth “Mad Max” film is an accounting of the road war that ensues as Max Rockatansky and a group led by Imperator Furiosa attempt to cross the desert. Why it’s worth watching: The post-apocalyptic franchise resumes 30 years after “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.” Just watching the trailer, you can tell it’s going to be weird yet inventive and epic. SCIENCE FICTION: “Insurgent” (March 20) Cast: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts Plot: In the follow-up to 2014’s “Divergent,” Tris and Four search for answers as they flee the hostile forces that threaten their society. Why it’s worth watching: The first installment was exciting and intriguing, and the sequel will bring even more action and drama as the plot thickens and secrets unfold. “Jurassic World” (June 12) Cast: Chris Pratt, Judy Greer, Ty Simpkins Plot: The “Jurassic World” dinosaur theme park is in decline after 10 years, and the park’s geneticists create a hybrid dinosaur in hopes of gaining more visitors. Why it’s worth watching: Everyone loves films with dinosaurs, especially dinosaurs gone bad. It will be interesting to see what the latest “Jurassic Park” film brings to the table. COMEDY: “Get Hard” (March 27) Cast: Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart Plot: Millionaire James King asks Darnell Lewis — who he assumes has a criminal past — for a crash-course in jail life after he’s convicted of tax evasion. Why it’s worth watching: If you need some laughs, this is your movie. With leading funnyman Ferrell paired with the outrageous Hart, memorable scenes are guaranteed. “Pitch Perfect 2” (May 15) Cast: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow Plot: College a cappella group the Barden Bellas aims to make history when it enters an international competition that has never before won by a United States team. Why it’s worth watching: 2012’s “Pitch Perfect” was a smash hit, and the sequel promises even more hilarious moments from the lovable characters as they find themselves in unknown territory. DRAMA: “The Age of Adaline” (April 24) Cast: Harrison Ford, Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman Plot: A woman who doesn’t age keeps private to guard her secret, until a chance meeting with a man causes her to rethink her immortal life. Why it’s worth watching: This film looks like a crowd pleaser that romance fans will love and watch over and over again for its timeless qualities. “Far from the Madding Crowd” (May 1) Cast: Carey Mulligan, Tom Sturridge, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen Plot: This film adaptation of the Thomas Hardy classic tells the story of Bathsheba Everdene, who must question her heart and her future when she is pursued by three men. Why it’s worth watching: Fans of period films will find everything they’re looking for in “Far from the Madding Crowd.” Don’t forget your tissues. Andrea Honaker is a reporter for The Gaston (N.C.)
