Because of a high rate of growth and development in the Rogue Valley, water is becoming an even more precious natural resource than ever before. State law says growth cannot be restricted by water, yet local water supplies are already being taxed like never before. “When can a community restrict growth based on its carrying capacity?” asked Pam Vavra, the co-chair of the JCPGP. She said this question would likely be brought up at tonight’s meeting. “If we have unbridled growth here, could we outstrip our availability of water.” Ashland and Medford are currently working to develop a tie-in water line between the two cities for emergency use only. But, Vavra said, “there is some concern that once an avenue exists for an augmented water supply, it could get used for everyday usage.” She added, “Right now there are more rumors, fears and innuendoes than facts. That’s why we organized this discussion.” JCPGP has invited members of the Ashland Public Works Department, the Medford Water Commission and the Medford City Council to discuss how the Rogue Valley might deal with water issues in the future.
