History and attractions The area now known as Talent was first settled by Jacob Wagner, who arrived in 1852. Many followed him to the spot ideally located near both Wagner and Bear creeks. Among them was Captain Alden from Yreka, Calif. He and his men built a fort on Wagner's property which gave rise to a community of settlers. The city is named for another settler who came later, Aaron P. Talent, who opened the town's first general store. Talent is home to many of the firsts in the history of Southern Oregon, including the first known school house in Jackson County, built in the summer of 1854 on the banks of Bear Creek; and the Baptist Church on the corner of Main and I streets is the oldest Baptist church in Southern Oregon and the second oldest in the state. Political firsts include the first woman in the state to be elected to public office after suffrage when Leta Luke was elected as City Recorder in 1912. That same year, the city also elected William H. Breese, who became one of the few Socialist mayors ever elected in Oregon. Email your...
