The six-foot, chain link fence was erected recently by Summit Investments of Medford, which owns the lot as well as the buildings housing Shop'n Kart and Bi-Mart, said Eric Chaddock, manager of Shop'n Kart. The fence immediately created another problem for surrounding residents, especially those living across the railroad tracks: they could no longer walk across the tracks to shop, something they had done for decades. “I had a lot of calls, about 40 people,” said Chaddock. However, owners say they will cut a gate in the long fence next week, so the short-cut can be continued. In the meantime, shoppers have had to walk several hundred yards east to Tolman Creek Road, which can be a cumbersome journey with a load of groceries. When they built the fence, owners fenced off a small part of the giant dirt lot for overflow parking for Shop'n Kart, enough for a few dozen vehicles. “The problems were increasing out there on the lot, but the final straw was when I came to work at 5:30 one morning and they had a big bonfire going, right next to my asphalt lot. That was it,” Chaddock said. Another change for the lot is the removal of the big, blue recycling bin for newspaper, says Pete Jorgensen of the Ashland Lions, which has used its income for decades to help pay for its eyeglasses and hearing program. The bin, as well as those at Mountain Meadows and Minute Market on Siskiyou Boulevard, were closed because of a drop in the paper market. The bin at Shop'n Kart, he adds, was also troubled by illegal parking trash and “people staying there when they shouldn’t.” “We used to get a fair amount of money, but over the last eight months, the net was $66, after we paid to have it hauled — and that’s not enough for one pair of glasses. We got a lot of calls about the bin being gone,” he adds. The Lions were selling paper for $19.75 a ton, but hauling was $135 each time. The income in the last eight months was $741, minus hauling of $675, for a net of $66.22, he said.
