--> --> Beaver lands All-State accolades By AP and The Tidings Ashland High senior Scott Beaver wrapped up his prep soccer career with one more trophy - an honorable-mention slot on the Class 4A all-state team. Beaver, who played on the Grizz varsity squad for four years, is a two-time All Southern Oregon Conference selection. The striker led the Grizzlies in goals (12) and points (27) in the 2001 campaign, and was one of four SOC players to corral all-state laurels. Klamath Union's Luis Garcia, the SOC Player of the Year, earned first-team honors for the second straight year, while KU's Krister Balme and Grants Pass' Matt Lamont each received third-team accolades. In 3A, Al Albright and John Hendricks of Phoenix High each received high honors. Albright was selected to the first team, while Hendricks earned second-team recognition. Jesuit swept the Class 4A boys' and girls' soccer titles, so it's fitting that the leaders of both teams were named the best players in the state by coaches. Alex Salazar and Maggie Manning, both senior forwards, were voted 4A players of the year in The Oregonian's annual all-state teams. "I think the award goes to someone who can go out there and make a difference," Salazar said. "It reminds me that I have to work hard, but it also makes me feel good about all the work I put in." Two other Jesuit players, senior defender Josh Brown and senior goalkeeper Jake Jackson, were voted to the boys' first team after helping lead the Crusaders to a 19-0 record and their third title in a row (they shared the title in 1999) and 10th since 1986. Manning said she doesn't consider herself a leader on the team, which was 17-0-1. "The senior leadership was great this season, and I'm not really one of the vocal ones. I try to be a good example," Manning said. "I hope my teammates know me as a friend. This year was so great - everybody got along well and we needed that to help everything work on the field." Ken Marshall of Redmond was chosen the boys' coach of the year, and Lake Oswego's Dominic Yambasu was voted the girls' coach of the year. In Class 3A/2A/1A, Ty Harden was voted the boys' player of the year. Harden, a junior, helped Junction City to a 16-1-1 record and its first state championship. Junction City's Chris Bolton won the Class 3A/2A/1A coach of the year award in his third season of coaching. Catlin Gabel junior Hilary Fisher was selected Class 3A/2A/1A girls' player of the year after helping the Eagles to a 17-1-1 record and their eighth title in a row. Blanchet coach Bob Weber was voted Class 3A/2A/1A girls' coach of the year after he guided the Cavaliers to their first championship game. Email your...
