Submitted photo André Angermann (pronounced with a soft “a” and “g”), or Brighteyes as he is known locally, was born in Poland and raised there and in Germany. In 1982 he moved to the United States; last year, he moved to Talent, where he began creating his sacred geometry designs. His art is a culmination of his past experiences, including studying science and mathematics at universities in Europe, social work involving helping the elderly and children, and embarking on a shamanic journey in the Peruvian rain forest. After coming to the United States, Angermann sought spirituality in many traditions, from Buddhist to Native American. He became fascinated with the similarity between modern physics and ancient wisdom teachings that combined the scientific and spiritual. His early childhood experiences — feeling like a foreigner in postwar Eastern Europe because his family was a mixed German and Polish family and losing his mother before he turned a year old — led him eventually to the Peruvian rain forest, where, feeling the need to “change a few of my habits on a deep level ... protective habits I’d developed as a child that were no longer helpful,” he sought out the shaman. “My profoundest experience there was that while I didn't speak much Spanish, I actually really connected with the shaman energetically, and I let go of my fear of humanity - literally overnight,” he says. This and the profound connection he made with nature in the rain forest opened the door to the art he now creates. Inspiration : “Nature. Trees and other plants, clouds, rain and creeks.” “If you look at all heavens and nature in terms of patterns, the main element in nature is geometry,” he explains. “Basically all sacred geometry is based on the phi ratio. You see this in a nautilus shell, pine cones, broccoli and everywhere in your body. ... It is the only ratio we know so far that is building energy on a physical level as well as metaphysical.” Other than commissioned designs, his creations are predominantly abstract, although dolphins emerge in a couple. “The dolphins inspired me, “ he says. “I feel their support. They are wonderful creatures ... ancient and wise, but also playful.” He creates his designs on his computer and prints them on greeting cards, quality gichlee prints and even T-shirts. Some of these items are sold in Ashland, such as the greeting cards at Nuwandart Gallery; most are sold through his Web site. Years ago he worked in landscape and carpentry with the elderly and with abused children. “Each experience is very enriching,” he says. “When we go there with our hearts open, we can learn a lot.” Over the past decade, Brighteyes developed computer graphic skills while creating marketing publications and Websites. Later, he was inspired by the Beloved Community's Peacemaker course in Ashland and its visual focus, the ancient “Symbol of the Awakened Self” geometric design. Reproducing this symbol for himself, he says, “reawakened my creativity and the desire to share the insights I have received over the course of my life from many disciplines and from many sources, including what we call other dimensions, realms, worlds or realities.” Since then he has been creating designs full time, a few based on ancient symbols and many of this own creation that come to him in bits of inspiration over days or weeks, evolving through “hundreds of changes until it’s right.” It can start with an image he's seen or a number he's heard. Sometimes it is the product of difficult mathematical equations. “In general, the designs are intended to bring something out that is inside of us, to invoke the presence to allow us to connect with our greater Being, whatever you choose to call that. “They are meant to uplift and inspire and effect us on a subatomic and cellular level,” he explains. His work is now taking on new dimensions: commissioned energy portraits and events with performing artists who spontaneously respond to his designs played on a screen.
