First, the Ashland High grad and current Stanford University ace was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the third round of Tuesday's Major League baseball draft. Second, he will start the opener of the College World Series Friday against Tulane. Guthrie, a draft-eligible sophomore, was taken by the Pirates with the 84th selection overall. It was Pittsburgh's second pick of the draft. The Pirates took Kent State slugger John VanBenschoten as their first choice. "It's exciting to finally know what team you have a shot to play for," said Guthrie - who is en route to Omaha, Neb. - through a release from Stanford. "This has been a very exciting year at Stanford. I've learned so much and been able to get better as a player and a person." Guthrie, who was drafted but did not sign with the New York Mets out of high school, is 12-4 on the year with a 2.58 ERA. The hard-throwing right-hander already ranks ninth on Stanford's single-season list for victories (12) and strikeouts (121). More impressive is Guthrie's success in the postseason. Guthrie knocked off Marist 4-3 in the regionals and then opened the Super Regionals with a complete game 11-1 victory over South Carolina. Because of that success he is slated to open the CWS.
