Since we've opened, these beautiful plants have been widely appreciated by people of all ages who wonder at their shooting star like flowers bursting with color. Recently, someone stole about half of our hanging fuchsias. Considering our cafe is wide open and on the corner of Water and Main, it is hard to believe someone would be so bold. Furthermore, what would drive someone to steal others' flowers? It's not the money that upsets me, it's the fact that they targeted our beautiful plants I've nurtured for months to put in the Cafe for everyone to experience and appreciate. Whoever you are, would you please return them?! A reward will be given, no questions will be asked-but, shame on you. Adrienne Hill Water Street Cafe To moderate Republicans Never have I witnessed such a danger to our country as what this present administration has wrought. Never have I feared so much for the soul of our country. It is time to put partisan politics aside and to consider what is best for our country. To restore our stature in the world, to lesson terrorism, to put our economic house in order, to regain our lost liberties, please consider voting for someone other than George Bush, who with his arrogant, secretive administration is disdained worldwide. We are not an island. We cannot stand alone. The intricacies of technology and economy no longer afford us that option. If Bush should win again, the world community can only infer that we citizens of the United States approve of his agenda to rule the world, by whatever means, with no thought given to other people's culture, religion or place in history. Throughout history, no tyrant or country has ever succeeded in conquering the world. It's an impossibility and it's immoral. And it can bankrupt a country. We need leaders who are thoughtful and wise, leaders who think long term and who debate and discuss positions openly with others, leaders who seriously ponder the consequences of the decisions they make. So Republicans, help our country redeem its honor and integrity, help our country show the world that we are still a just and caring nation by rejecting this current administration come November. Anybody but Bush! Patricia A Rickert Williams Special session a waste of funds Oregon House Speaker, Karen Minnis, has called for a special session of the Legislature. In my opinion, they did enough damage during regular working hours, and as a taxpayer I'm not inclined to be robbed in overtime. The alleged reason for this expensive and wasteful special session is to cobble together a budget plan. They couldn't do it during the regular session. They aren't going to do it now. They know that, so what'?s up? Something smells of red herring. Could it be that the real reason some House Republicans are calling for a special session is to get free campaign ink and force a few pet agendas on Oregonians? Could these divisive and short-sighted folks really be making political hay at taxpayers' expense? Rank, partisan politics? In Salem? Does a bear, um, sleep in the woods? Phil Newton Murphy Disappointed with the festival Last night I attended another disappointing play in Ashland, a mundane production of "Topdog/Underdog." It was just as unsatisfying as last year's travesty of "Romeo and Juliet." Then, my argument was with the director, the use of a gun and the entire fake-modern production. This time my argument is with the playwright of "Topdog" and with OSF's selection of the play for the Ashland repertoire. I came away angry because playwright Suzan-Lori Parks helped to perpetuate the stereotype of black men. What's new about two poor black brothers living in a rundown rooming house, struggling to survive, hustling on the street, jive-talking each other and dealing with their sibling rivalry? That may be reality, but it smacks of clich�. And where's the art in the cheap, predictable ending? In the context of today's world and the content of today's evening news, why do we have to be exposed to yet more violence in live theater? When I go to a play, I don't need to escape or be entertained. I want to see something unique, clever, intelligent, thoughtful, provoking. I got none of that last night from "Topdog/Underdog." While selecting plays other than Shakespeare, why can't OSF give us something that doesn't play like television?
