This remarkable event began in 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma, Wash., surgeon, directed his passion for running into raising awareness and money to help fight cancer. In May of that year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family and patients pledged money to watch or join him as he circled the University of Puget Sound’s Baker stadium for 24 hours. The event raised $27,000, and has since grown to become the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising activity, connecting more than 4,200 communities across the nation in support. The American Cancer Society is the largest source of nonprofit, nongovernmental cancer research funding in the United States, and has been a part of nearly every milestone in the history of cancer research. Funds raised from the relay event will also be used to provide services for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers, and public education. The theme of this year’s event is Carnival For a Cure, and there are many ways members of our Ashland community can be involved. You can form your own team to run or walk the track, join an existing team, or sponsor a team member. To date, we have 35 committed teams who have already raised $11,000. They represent students, service groups, faith-based organizations, businesses and friends helping friends who have had or are presently facing cancer. Relay organizers also need help running the many activities we have planned around the carnival theme. These include sports challenges, live entertainment, contests, booths and innovative activities designed to educate the public about cancer. At dusk, we need volunteers to help with the Luminaria, or Ceremony of Hope, when candles are lighted to honor or remember those have battled cancer. Finally, you can also be involved by simply marking this date on your calendar, and then join us for this rewarding community celebration. Relay For Life is not only an important cause; it is great fun and contributes so much towards creating hope, progress and answers in the race to cure cancer.
