The 4-3 and 11-3 losses may be reason for concern, but according to head coach Don Senestraro, “things are going to be all right.” The Pilots played with a modified roster, missing four of their players. Numbers are power in a doubleheader and the lack of depth showed up in the second game of the evening. “We played well in the first game,” said Pilots assistant coach John Schroeder. “The boys just got a little hamstrung toward the end.” As if the tables weren’t already turned enough against Ashland’s American Legion A team, the Pilots went into Saturday’s twin bill with only one team practice under their belts and more than a month off from live pitching. Meanwhile, Crater had already completed a handful of games. Considering the odds against, Senestraro had plenty of reasons to be pleased. “It’s hard to just jump into a game situation with so little practice,” Senestraro said. “I’m actually pretty happy with the way we played in the first game, and now we know what to work on.” First off, the Pilots will focus on pitching. Aaron San Nicholas took the mound for the Pilots in Game 1, going the full seven innings. “Aaron had some good stuff for us on the mound,” Senestraro said, “He was the reason we were in that game, on the mound and with the bat.” ASHLAND PILOTS shortstop Tysin Senestraro , inset with ball, goes for the tag at second base during Saturday’s season-opening doubleheader against Central Point. The Pilots dropped both games to open the season 0-2. Next on the Pilots’ schedule is Tuesday night’s doubleheader at Klamath Falls. After falling behind by three runs, San Nicholas smacked a three-run home run in the sixth inning to tie the game. “He had quite a game for us,” Schroeder said. “He was definitely a highlight today.” The Comets would come back, however, ending the game in the seventh with a shallow shot into the outfield. San Nicholas would continue his highlight day in Game 2 by going 3-for-3 and playing solid defense in right field. Jake Halverson took over as pitcher for the second game but exited in the third inning when the Comets got their bats going. The Pilots went though four pitchers in the second game until finding relief with Gus Gaviglio. “We saw some good stuff from (Halverson) today,” Senestraro said. “He’s a new addition this year and it was good for him to get some pitches in.” The Pilots played well early in the second game, but the Comets were finding the holes on offense and a good amount of Pilot errors allowed for Crater to blow the game open as early as the third inning. “We know what we get to work on now,” Senestraro said. “The good news is, for our next match we will be at full strength and will have worked out a lot of the minor issues.” Erik Hidle is a correspondent for the Ashland Daily Tidings.
