--> --> Aug. 6: Pilots take zone series, advance to state tourney Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland American Legion baseball team had to do something Saturday they haven't had to do all year. Play with their backs against the wall. The Pilots, who came into the zone playoffs with a 25-2 record, were facing a do-or-die Game 3 with Pepsi of Roseburg. Ashland responded with an 8-6 victory Saturday at North Mountain Park and advanced to this week's American Legion A state tournament. The Pilots open the state tournament at 3 p.m. Thursday at David Douglas High in Portland. After cruising to a 14-2 victory in the opener of the best of three series with Roseburg Thursday night, the Pilots watched as Roseburg battled its way back into the series with a 6-3 home victory Friday. Roseburg continued its hot play Saturday as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning before the Ashland bats were brought back to life. The Pilots scored their first run in the bottom of the second off an RBI by Mike Allen. A solo home run by Nick Danis in the fourth cut the lead to one and Torrance George singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Decker to tie the game. In the fifth an RBI double by Charles Dotterer and a two-run double by Nick Ehlers broke the game open. Ehlers pitched the first five innings to improve to 7-0 on the year. Ashland takes a sizzling 27-3 record to Portland. Email your...
