This month's beneficiary was the Children’s Advocacy Center for abused and neglected kids of the Rogue Valley. The event features an info table, socializing and maybe a brief talk-up of the cause — and loops in about $500 for its coffers, says Josh Nielsen of Standing Stone. Employees get to pick the nonprofit and, he adds, “It unifies us as a group in what causes we support and is a good opportunity to network.” Children’s Advocacy offers forensic interviews, forensic medical examinations, referrals to medical care and therapeutic intervention that includes individual and family therapy dealing with trauma and healing, says development director Michelle Wilson, who was operating an information table. “We can’t do what we do without the support of the community,” says board President Charlie Baggett, “especially in the awareness it brings to people, who may say, ‘This could be something for my child, to give hope back to the children, that they might have an ordinary life back after the most horrendous things happen — and, if not for events like this, they might not know it exists.” Children’s Advocacy serves up to 700 kids a year or about two new children daily — and supports and educates many more who are non-abusive family members, says Wilson. They train thousands of people in how to identify child abuse, protect family members and get help — and end up saving several childrens’ lives each year, she adds. “Our goal is children who are safe in families who are safe and have the resources they need for a warm home life environment,” notes Wilson. Former Jackson County District Attorney Mark Huddleston, an event attendee on Tuesday, Jan. 12, said “Standing Stone is standing up for the community and helping bring needed money to the center.” “It’s a great combination — beer and a great cause … a wonderful organization,” said Russ Rudometkin, quaffing an ale at the bar. The center’s next big fundraiser is “An Evening in Camelot,” with dinner, champagne, dancing and auction at Rogue Valley Country Club. You may sign up at cacjc.org . Over six years of staging benefits for nonprofits, Standing Stone has helped Bee Girl, No on LNG Pipeline and a range of environmental groups.
