The governor will hand a bronze replica of the Oregon Pioneer statue to Libby Appel, the artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, to honor the festival’s contribution to the greatness of the state. “We’re really thrilled,” OSF Executive Director Paul Nicholson said. OSF will be one of five groups and individuals honored by the third annual Governor’s Gold Awards at an invitation-only ceremony in Portland on Thursday evening. “I think it’s wonderful to see the company get this kind of recognition from the governor,” said Nancy Tait, the president of the OSF board of directors. The governor personally identified the festival to receive the award for community, city and county organizations during the Bite of Oregon event on the waterfront in Portland back in August. “I think that was the moment,” said Janeen Olsen, the director of marketing and communications at OSF. Actors Danforth Comins and Jeff Cummings, one of the festival’s actor-teacher teams, performed on three different stages at the event, and OSF officials were on hand to talk about the theater. Representatives from Noah’s Rafting and the Ashland Springs Hotel also attended the event. The same actor-teacher team, now on the road during the festival’s off-season, will perform the grave-digging scene from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” at the Thursday ceremony. “It’s a neat tie-in,” Olsen said. “It’s kind of nice that it’s the same actor-teacher team.” Appel, OSF Producing Director David Dreyfoos and several board members will attend the ceremony Thursday and bring the hand-crafted replica of the pioneer statue — originally created in 1938 by Ulric Ellerhusen to stand atop the Oregon Capitol Building — back to Ashland. Intel Corporation will receive the business/corporation award; Gertrude “Gert” Boyle, the chair of Columbia Sportswear, and Sue Shaffer, the chair of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, will each be honored as individuals in the private sector; and the Oregon National Guard will receive the award for individuals in the public sector.
