Stuwart Lueb, 34, is eligible for parole in 43 years. Lydia Way, 24, must serve at least 25 years before she can be considered for release. Swanson, 51, a married father with a workers' compensation practice, called a phone sex line on Oct. 19, 2004. Swanson talked to Way, with whom he had spoken before. She invited him to the apartment she shared with Lueb. When Swanson arrived, the meth addicts robbed him of his bank cards and checks. Then Lueb hit him in the head, and the pair gagged him and duct-taped a plastic bag over his head. They then stuffed him into a sleeping bag and put him in the back of his own car. They drove around pulling money out of Swanson's account. Then they drove to the Mount Hood National Forest and tied Swanson's body to a tree. The Multnomah County district attorney's office agreed not to seek the death penalty in exchange for Lueb leading police to the body. A search of the couple's apartment uncovered a scrawl-filled notebook outlining a plan to lure "the attorney" and then rob him. On Tuesday, Lueb and Way, who had separate hearings, apologized to Swanson's relatives and to their own families, who were in court. "I apologize for taking him from you," Way said. "I cannot turn back the clock. If I could, I would. I really would." Swanson's brother, Richard, and sister, Judith, attended both hearings, but spoke only at Lueb's. They said the last hours of their brother's life should not stand for the years of good work, kindness and energy. "There was so much left to do," Richard Swanson said. "To think that it was stolen away is extremely difficult to accept."
