"Alan has really done a lot with and for the city of Ashland in the last four years as mayor," said Ashland Elks Lodge No. 944 Exalted Ruler Jim Potter. "He's involved in any number of projects." Potter said DeBoer deserves recognition for his mature and balanced handling of difficult issues while in office and for his continuing volunteer work with local groups. "He did a wonderful job of handling city council meetings. He never stepped on anyone. He kept the meetings going and was very professional," Potter said. DeBoer currently serves on the Ashland YMCA finance and building committees, the Ashland Chamber of Commerce economic development committee and the Ashland Rotary Foundation Board of Directors. He is also active with the Ashland Community Land Trust, which works on affordable housing issues. Potter said Elks members especially appreciated DeBoer's presence and show of respect for veterans during the group's annual Flag Day ceremony, which was held on the Plaza in 2004. "Last year Alan took time out of his day to be part of our ceremony - and he's a busy guy," he said. DeBoer said he was pleased to be selected as "Citizen of the Year" by the group. "It's a nice award to get from the Elks and I'm appreciative," he said. "Elks do a lot of great things in the community." Education advocate Amy Amrheim received the honor in 2004, according to Elks members. Friday's presentation will begin at 6 p.m. in the Elks lodge, 255 E. Main St. The public is welcome to attend. Also that evening, Herm Blum will be named "Elk of the Year." Blum has served three times as head of the group and recently has been overseeing food operations and managing the club, according to Potter. Steve Booth, who has served as Leading Knight and will take over as Exalted Ruler in April, will be honored as the Elks' "Officer of the Year," Potter said.
