--> --> March 18: SOU softball team opens with split Ashland Daily Tidings Freshman Haley Varley's two-out, seventh-inning, bases-loaded single allowed the Southern Oregon University softball team to salvage a doubleheader split against Northwest Christian College at Raider Field on Saturday. The former North Medford star's flare to left field scored junior Lisa Jones, an Ashland High product, from third base and punctuated a two-run rally that sealed a 5-4 Raider victory. The win avenged a 9-1 Crusader romp in Game 1, the season opener for both schools. SOU's game-winning rally was ignited by three walks issued by NCC sophomore pitcherTina Houtz, and wedged between a key throwing error by Crusader catcher Tiffany Brown that allowed the tying run to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Eagle Point High and Raider junior Academic All-American infielder Latisha Inget. Southern Oregon managed only seven hits in the doubleheader, but former South Medford High all-star Angie Chaplin smashed triples in consecutive at-bats in Game 2. Junior NAIA Region I all-star pitcher Brandi Brown was the pitcher of record in both games for the Raiders, and the Colton native collected 16 strikeouts in 14 innings. Former North Medford High player Tina Quintero paced the Crusaders with five hits in the twin bill, including a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI in the second game. Freshman outfielder Sara Lewis added three hits, including a three-run home run and an RBI triple to spearhead the NCC Game 1 attack. SOU plays its next 12 contests (six doubleheaders) on the road prior to the Cascade Conference preseason tournament in Ashland on April 6-7. The tournament will kick off the 2002 Cascade Conference season. Email your...
