--> --> Helman students raise $1,150 for fund to aid Trade Center orphans By Maggie McGehee Ashland Daily Tidings In just four hours on Saturday, Helman Elementary School second and third graders raised about $1,150 for the Twin Towers Orphan Fund for children who lost one or both of their parents in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York. The students held a yard sale of items brought from their own homes, and they sold baked goods and hand-made clay pots the students crafted themselves to raise money for the fund. "It's amazing. It's a huge amount of money," Helman second and third grade teacher Julie Romberg said today. "The children counted all of the money yesterday, they counted all but the change, which we are taking to the bank on Thursday. It's a very large amount of money ... We figured we'd make about $300 on the bowls, but this is a lot of money for a yard sale because we didn't have any big items." The children and their parents held the yard sale fundraiser Saturday morning and Ashland residents turned out in full force, intentionally over-paying for baked goods and other items as a way of donating to the charity, Romberg said. The children then turned the fundraiser into an educational experience on Monday, using their math skills to count the cash before heading out to the bank to have the pocket change sorted and counted there. Romberg credits the success to the generosity of Ashland residents. "A lot of people knew what this was for," Romberg said. "We are real appreciative to the community for coming out and being so supportive." Once the bank sorts and counts the remaining change, the money will be converted into a check and sent out to the Twin Towers Orphans Fund in New York. Email your...
