The plan, which will be available to the public on Friday, draws heavily on its preferred alternative in the draft plan released on June 9, 2002, but also includes information from the roughly 17,000 public comments received, said Howard Hunter, the assistant monument manager. "We tried to go out of our way to understand what the concerns were," Hunter stressed. "We've done our best within the limits of the law and the proclamation. "We looked hard at how we could improve it," he noted. The 52,940-acre monument is located in the BLM's Medford District in the mountainous region immediately east of Ashland where the Cascade, Klamath and Siskiyou ranges converge. Two prominent peaks in the monument are Pilot Rock and Soda Mountain. The document, which includes a final environmental impact statement, proposes a plan which will guide monument management for the next 10 to 15 years. Although there are no dramatic revelations in the proposal, it is a major step toward creating a management plan. A final decision on the proposal is expected within six months. Copies of the proposed resource management plan and final environmental impact statement for the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is in the mail to those on the agency's mailing list. The documents should arrive by the end of the week. The list includes those who participated in the planning process. For those not on the list, limited copies or CD-ROM versions will be available at the district office in Medford by Friday afternoon. It will also be available on the Internet at www.or.blm.gov/csnm Friday marks the beginning of a 30-day protest period for those who disagree with the proposed plan. However, only those who participated in the planning process and have an interest which may be adversely affected may protest. Written protests should be sent to: Director, Bureau of Land Management, Att: Brenda Hudgens-Williams, protests coordinator, WO-210/LS-1075, Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C. 20240. Comments also will be accepted from the public during that 30-day period. Although it is not considered an official public comment period, the agency is interested in comments that may shed light on anything that was missed or needs "tweaking," officials said.
