Ralph made Ashland his permanent residence in 1988 and died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving life partner, Doris Kimball, and his two daughters, Mary Jo Bitner and Jeanne Heuving. Ralph was born in the Netherlands in 1920. During World War II he served in the Dutch Merchant Marines and immigrated to the United States in the aftermath of the War. He settled in Seattle and soon became an American citizen. He married Yvonne Loe in 1948. They had their two daughters and were divorced in 1976. During his years in Seattle he developed a very successful aluminum fabrication business, Alps, Inc. Throughout his life Ralph was an avid snow skier and devotee of the performing arts. After his retirement he frequently visited Ashland to attend plays. After meeting his partner Doris, he expanded his interest in the performing arts to include musicals, operas, and concerts. He spent his winters skiing in Sun Valley, Idaho, and over the years he became a celebrity as one of the oldest and most admired skiers on the mountain. He celebrated his 80th birthday in Sun Valley with Doris and 300 of his skiing friends and acquaintances. At the age of 65 he began writing plays that addressed social, political and philosophical issues. For him writing plays was a great adventure in self-exploration and self-realization. He completed seventeen plays and, in one of his last dramas, a character modeled on himself states that writing plays "constitutes the greatest learning experience of my life." Ralph is survived by his life partner, Doris Kimball; his daughter Jeanne Heuving and her husband, James Reed of Seattle, Washington; his daughter Mary Jo Bitner, her husband, Richard Bitner and their two daughters, Andrea and Christa of Phoenix, Arizona. He will be missed by all of the many people whose lives he touched and influenced in such a positive way. A celebration of his life is being planned for this spring in Sun Valley. Anyone who wishes to honor Ralph may make a donation to the charity of their choice in his name.
