--> --> May 4: Grizz girls golf team takes second, will play in state By Chris Miller Ashland Daily Tidings Sometimes second place is good enough. The Ashland High girl's golf team will attest to that, taking second place in the Southern Oregon Conference District Tournament Friday at Rogue Valley Country Club. The team's second-place finish behind Roseburg earned the Grizz girls the school's first trip to the state golf tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, starting May 13. Grizz head coach Stephanie Santos said she's excited her girls get to play at state. "I am happy that we made it. Bianca (Montagnino) and Stephanie (Johns) did a nice job," Santos said. "Bianca had a personal record again, and finished fourth." Johns, a freshman, took second overall in districts with a combined score of 178. Roseburg's Jennifer Gaston won the medalist honors, finishing six shots in front of Johns with a 172. Santos said Johns played well, especially for her age, but had some trouble on the greens. "She played well for a freshman," Santos said. "She finished only six shots back and I am happy with that. Stephanie had trouble with her putting, which she is normally really good at." The Grizz have this week to hone their skills before departing Saturday or Sunday for Corvallis. Santos feels her top two players will do fine at state, but the team score depends on the third and fourth players. "Teamwise it's hard to tell, it depends on how well Kelly (Thompson), and Emiko (Kimura) do, if they are into it," Santos said. "Our focus this week will be on chipping and putting," the coach said. "We are going to Corvallis on Saturday, or Sunday morning to get a practice round in, and walk the course." Email your...
