Super Tuesday hasn't even happened yet and once again, popular sentiment wants to crown a Democratic presidential nominee, rather than let people elect one (didn't they try this once with Dean already?). They (it's hard to say who this insidious "they" is, but they know who they are) are calling for Dennis Kucinich and the other stragglers to drop out of the race (see below) and already talking about John Edwards as a strong vice-presidential candidate. Yet, 75 percent or so of the delegates remain to be cast, including the biggest prizes of California, Texas and New York. Super Tuesday will give Edwards the shot he always wanted: him and John Kerry, mano-a-mano so to speak, without Wesley Clark or Howard Dean to muddy the vote. Edwards is a compelling candidate who has no business rolling over for the good of the party. He should challenge Kerry and beat him, or toughen him up for the daunting challenge of taking on President Bush. And as for Kucinich, why not stay in the race? True he won't win, but a goal from the beginning was to represent the anti-war side of the Democratic party. It's a voice we need to hear, right up until the convention. Other views Kucinich needs to get out of the race Jay Leno was hardly kidding the other night when he quipped that Dennis Kucinich got a ticket for loitering in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. Kucinich just won't quit. He insists he's got a real chance if he hangs in there until the Democratic Convention this summer. Going into the Maine caucuses, Kucinich still has the two delegates he started with. Last Tuesday, Kucinich came out of seven primaries with no new delegates but promptly announced, "The race for the nomination will go all the way to the convention. It is at the convention where I will win the nomination, based on the emergence of Iraq as the defining issue." The problem is, Democratic voters are coming away from the polls saying the economy, jobs and finding a candidate who can beat President Bush are at the top of their agenda. Sincere as he is about spreading his anti-war message, Kucinich is drifting farther from reality with each primary contest.
