--> --> State panel looks at road fees based on mileage SALEM (AP) - Oregonians would pay for road construction by fees based on travel under one idea being studied by an interim legislative panel. A key legislator says any fee on road users should supplement and not replace the gasoline tax. "As long as we have gasoline-powered vehicles, we need to have a fuel tax," said Rep. Bruce Starr, R-Hillsboro, a member of the Road User Fee Task Force and co-chairman of the House Interim Transportation Committee. The task force, which next meets Feb. 1, is considering alternatives to the gas tax, which has been 24 cents a gallon for nearly a decade. The gas tax and auto registration fees are the main sources of money for road and bridge construction and maintenance.
