--> --> Aug. 13: Ashland High girls summer league team wraps up a victorious season By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland High summer league girls basketball team, comprised of the same girls that will eventually make up the Grizzlies' 2002-03 squad, wrapped up a successful off-season with a first-place effort in the McMinnville Tournament. The Grizzlies went 6-0 at the July 20 tournament at Arcata, Calif., including a 36-26 victory over Eureka in the championship game. Hillary Huyett led Ashland High with 18 points in the tourney clincher. With the win, Ashland finished the summer 13-5, including a 3-1 record and another first-place finish in June's Southern Oregon Conference Tipoff Tournament. Ashland also went 2-1 in the Eugene Classic, 2-2 in the End of the Oregon Trail tournament and 0-1 against national power Oregon City. First-year head coach Steve Humann was pleased with his team's overall performance, particularly with the backcourt duo of Huyett and Alysse Carlson and the inside play of Marla Morin and Chloe Hansen. "We've had an outstanding turnout all summer," said Humann, who's coached most of the same girls on sixth, seventh and eighth grade tournament teams. "A couple of freshmen, some sophomores, and Hillary and Alysse were on fire. In one game in the (McMinnville Tourney) semifinals, Alysse had 20 and Hillary had 17." The McMinnville Tourney title was particularly impressive considering Ashland played all six games without Morin, a first-team all-SOC post last season. Humann said Hansen stepped up, helping the Grizzlies go out on a good note. "The leadership of Chloe was tremendous," Humann said. "We've been having open gym ever since (the McMinnville Tournament) about four times a week, where we've been probably averaging 25-30 girls. That's the whole sixth grade through high school. You build the team during the winter, but you build individuals during the summer. "I was real pleased with the summer program." Email your...
