The meeting begins at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the Ashland Civic Center Council Chambers, 1175 E. Main St. An appeal of the Ashland Planning Commission’s denial of the Fordyce Street co-housing proposal will come before the council again. The planning commission, citing incompatibility with the surrounding neighborhood of single-family homes, turned down the project that would provide townhouse-style homes for low and middle-income people. The issue first came before the city council in March, but has been continued to subsequent meetings for lack of time. The council also will consider an appeal of the planning commission’s approval of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship plans to build a social hall addition to the congregation’s building on Fourth Street. The congregation also is seeking approval of its present use of a nearby house for services. Representatives said they were unaware they needed approval for that use. Ashland resident Philip Lang has appealed the project, arguing it degrades the livability of the area because of inadequate parking and makes the home unusable for affordable housing. Planning staff members have urged approval of the congregation’s plans, which require a conditional use permit — a type of exception to planning rules. The church does not provide enough off-street parking to meet current development standards, but the church at the center of town has been in use for approximately a century, planners said. Mayor John Morrison also will seek council confirmation for his appointments and reappointments to various city committees, commissions and boards.
