Controlled burns above Ashland close multiple trails By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted May 14, 2018 at 12:07 PM Updated May 14, 2018 at 12:07 PM Two controlled burns above Ashland will close multiple trails and roads Monday and Tuesday.Both are underburns, which include piles of branches and other forest debris, according to Chris Chambers, forestry division chief for Ashland Fire-Rescue.One controlled burn is on the west side of Ashland Loop Road at the end of Granite Street, where crews have been working since last weekend. About 15 acres there are scheduled to be burned, Chambers said.The other burn, covering 28 acres, is on the east side of Ashland Creek above the intersection of Morton Street and Ashland Loop Road and below the White Rabbit trailhead, Chambers said.Closed trails include BTI, Bandersnatch, Red Queen, Alice in Wonderland, Gryphon, Jub Jub, Snark, Waterline and Jabberwocky. Fell on Knee and Wonder are closed today but may reopen Tuesday, officials said. Other closed trails include Toothpick, Catwalk, anything above Four Corners, Caterpillar/Lizard, and Lewis Loops. Closed roads include the intersection of the west side of U.S. Forest Service Road 2060 and Ashland Loop Road 1½ miles from the end of Granite Street.Smoke from the burn caused a slight drop in air quality at an Ashland reporting station Sunday night, with air quality measured from "good" to "moderate" from about 8 p.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday, according to data from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. Air quality should improve this week.
