LOCAL ROUNDUP Grizzlies suffer another tough loss; SOU softball team sweeps BC Malcolm nets 27 in nonleague loss to Grants Pass By Joe Zavala DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Posted Feb. 19, 2015 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Posted Feb. 19, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Already having endured its fare share of heartbreaking losses the Ashland High boys basketball team suffered another on Wednesday. Grants Pass used a big surge at the start of the fourth quarter to build a 10-point lead then watched Ashland’s comeback attempt fall just short in the final seconds as the visiting Cavers beat the Grizzlies 62-57 in nonleague action at Mountain Avenue Gym. Ashland cut Grants Pass’ double-digit lead to two and appeared to force a turnover with 22 seconds to go but the officials awarded the visitors a timeout instead. After the Cavers hit a free throw following the timeout Ashland’s Collin Malcolm, who drained three 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 27 points, missed a potential game-tying 3 and Grants Pass got the rebound. “We turned it over a few times, but at the end of the day when you shoot 14 less free throws than they do that’s what happens,” Ashland coach Keithan Gregg said. Walker Shibley-Styer added 11 points and Jack Feinberg and Malik Pippa five apiece for the Grizzlies (9-11), who have lost five straight. Grants Pass (9-13) was led by JC McKinley’s 15 points. Ashland hosts North Eugene on Friday. “We’ve just got to stop the bleeding a little bit,” Gregg said. GRANTS PASS (62) – McKinley 15, Stine 14, Cotton 14, Ryan 13, Musser 3, Weiss 2, Appling 1, Evens 0, Hanley 0. Totals: 19 17-25 62. Grants Pass 16 16 11 19 – 62 Ashland 14 12 17 14 – 57 3-point goals – Grants Pass 7 (Stein 4, Musser 1, Ryan 1, McKinley 1), Ashland 8 (Malcolm 3, Shibley-Styer 2, Graham 1, Feinberg 1, Pippa 1). Fouled out – Pippa. JV result – Ashland won. College Softball Southern Oregon continued its fast start to the 2015 season in its first home games, sweeping British Columbia 4-1 and 8-2 in nonleague action at University Field. The Raiders scored three runs on two hits and two Thunderbird errors in the sixth to pull out the opener, then tallied four runs in the first inning and led the rest of the way in the nightcap to improve to 12-4. In the first game, Southern Oregon’s Cheyenne Bricker surrendered only a single unearned run in the first before dominating British Columbia (2-9) the rest of the way. She gave up five hits and walked four to improve to 6-1, lowering her ERA to 2.84. The game was tied 1-1 when SOU broke it open in the sixth. Back-to-back one-out singles by Kristin Ahern and Ally Painter got things started for the Raiders, and both scored when Megan Winton’s grounder to short was booted by BC’s Yasmin Bains. Down 1-0 in the third, SOU tied the game when Winton led off with a triple and scored on Kelsey Randall’s two-out single to left. Randall was 3-for-4 with an RBI. In the nightcap, Ahern delivered a two-run double to start the scoring, the Raiders’ third double of the inning. Third baseman Alexa Gonzalez led the Raiders’ 12-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Randall (2-for-4), Ahern (2-for-2) and Cortney Nolan (2-for-2) also came through at the plate. Brianne Craig picked up the win in the circle after holding the Thunderbirds to two runs, none earned, on six hits in a complete-game effort. She struck out four and walked two.     By Joe Zavala DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Posted Feb. 19, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Comment or view comments /* $( document ).ready(function() { // Jquery mobile is trying to style the button and leaving a blank gry button on top of a white button $("#viafouracoms .vf-comment-controls li.vf-right").html(' Submit '); });*/ » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Fantasy Football Outlook for Browns Stars Feb. 19, 2015 at 6:32 pm 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook for Vikings Stars Feb. 13, 2015 at 6:47 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Jets Stars Feb. 7, 2015 at 4:30 am Super Bowl Fantasy Review and Highlights Feb. 2, 2015 at 10:00 am Top Fantasy Players, Projections for Patriots vs. Seahawks Jan. 31, 2015 at 8:39 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Titans Stars Jan. 30, 2015 at 10:37 am calendar Connect with DailyTidings.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Alerts Email alerts RSS feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
