Letters to the Editor: Give war a chance I say, give war a chance. For 12 years the U.N. has failed through peaceful means to disarm Saddam. Why will more of the same suddenly be successful now? In the first place, it was the threat of war, backed by the presence of armed power getting ready to smash him if necessary, that made Saddam decide to allow the U.N. inspectors back into Iraq. In the second place, how long can the armed forces sit there as a "threat" while the U.N. churns out another dozen or so "final - chance" resolutions politely asking Saddam to disarm? In the third place, if more inspections are the answer, please ask the French to explain why after WWI under the terms of the Versailles Peace Treaty, rigid French inspections of Germany for 15 years, in the end failed so miserably. Of course war is a risk. Of course we want peace. Go tell Saddam Hussein. Joor Nadav Bol, Ashland Finding a teen's sign to be a terribly sad thing We found it so terribly sad to see the photo in the Tidings of the teenager holding a sign "Give War A Chance." As opposed to what - Peace? What possible chance would this young lady want? To see how many thousands of innocent men women and children will be slaughtered if this invasion does occur? How many casualties a "war" will maim and cripple? How many of our young children will lose their lives in this invasion driven by our raving Dubya? And most importantly, what if Iraq, in fact, does not have weapons of mass destruction? Is this naive young lady willing to sacrifice thousands of American troops to find this out? It is so easy for Bush, Chaney and Rumsfeld, who have not served in the armed forces, to direct the war from their comfortable chairs. They have not experienced for themselves the brutality that such conflagrations inflict upon the lives that are lost and the devastation it brings to their loved ones as a result of war. Most importantly, these blind warmongers are going against the majority of the people. As one cartoon indicated, Bush may have said, "Why do I have to be worried about those millions of protesters, they didn't vote for me anyway." Once again, we plead with those teenagers to think about what their sign says. We've given war a chance from WWI, WWII and Vietnam and the loss of lives are in the millions. Violence breeds violence, and our impotent leader is again trying to disprove this. There is a saying we've seen that is quite appropo, "War does not prove who is right, but who is left?"
