Ashlanders probably believe their donations will be available to their neighbors in times of need, but this simply is not true. Access serves Medford residents first and foremost, and it is nearly impossible for Ashland residents to get help with a power bill or other basic necessity. Neighbors, if you would like to help the less fortunate in your own backyard, please donate to the Butler Fund. Local families can get help from his worthwhile organization. Vanessa Houk Ashland Jewish description wrong, insulting The local discourse on the Israeli and Palestinian conflict has been brought to a new low. Dane Coefer wrote (May 22), "...a European stranger raped Palestine." The stranger, of course, were members of my own family and the Jewish people fleeing the infernos of the Holocaust to create the democratic state of Israel. Coefer's depiction of Jews as the "stranger" and "rapist" is based on medieval caricature, and is bigoted. He would do well to study history. From the very beginning Israel agreed to the United Nations partition plan that would have created Jewish and Palestinian homelands. This two-state solution was rejected by the Palestinians in 1948, 1967, 1973, and 2000. Those of us working for peace and two democratic states living side by side are insulted by Coefer's inflammatory language. Isaac Walker letter (June 26) states "Sharon's Israel ... has gone into the Holocaust business...." If this writer had ever witnessed a holocaust he could never write such a foolish exaggeration. What stunned me, however, was his comment about the Israeli men, women, and children of all faiths who have been killed by homicide bombers. Walker writes, "The people sitting in a Tel Aviv restaurant suddenly transformed into bits of flying flesh are complicit - however unaware personally - in the Great Theft, and should not have considered themselves immune to the violence they've helped - however indirectly - to create." Bits of flying flesh? Shame on Walker! To make victims into victimizers is a horrible abuse of truth. Rabbi David Zaslow Ashland Story doesn't put it in perspective It was front page news on May 14th in the Mail Tribune - and the most heinous excuse for reporting Southern Oregon has ever seen: a Jackson County Sheriff Office Administrative Secretary was arrested by the Oregon State Police and lodged in the Jackson County Jail. Why? Because Sheriff Mike Winters alleges that over the course of eight long years, she embezzled a grand total of as much as $1,000, possibly even more! How can our media condone and assist in totally shattering a government employee's life over a sum so picayune? One thousand dollars over eight years? Who in their right mind would even call that "embezzlement" for the bad publicity? She's an employee described as "diligent" and "hardworking" by her coworkers. But discrediting and trashing people seems to be Sheriff Winters' modus operandi for getting rid of people. Isn't this the same person who publicly discredited former Jackson County Sheriff Bob Kennedy to get himself elected? One thousand dollars over eight years equals $125 per year, which works out to 50 cents per day, the cost of a newspaper. Sounds to me like Sheriff Winters is blaming the secretary for his daily Mail Tribune fetish. The tremendous sums of our tax dollars expended doing so should rightfully outrage all Jackson County citizens. That so called "embezzlement" of $1,000 over a period of eight years has cost us taxpayers at least a hundred times as much by now, in arrest, police car ride and escort, jail processing, body cavity search (shudder), court fees, attorneys' fees, audits, filings, police work, investigations, etc. In fact, that secretary's first hour in jail cost us more than what Sheriff Winters claims she "embezzled." Thus, Sheriff Winters has embezzled way more than a $1,000 from all of us.
