RECREATION New Ashland map and guide released Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Apr. 2, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 2, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Local report The second edition of the Ashland Map Guide is now available at the Ashland Chamber & Visitor and Convention Bureau office as well as many locations in Ashland. The guide, produced by the VCB, includes updated maps of the Ashland Watershed, Ashland city streets, Lithia Park and new maps of Crater Lake National Park, Mountain Lakes and Sky Lakes wildernesses, Table Rocks and the newly designated Cascade Siskiyou Scenic Bikeway. According to the VCB, recommended hikes and rides were added to provide information for residents and visitors interested in exploring the region, including such places as Crater Lake and Table Rocks. Crater Lake National Park is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The guide also includes information about the Ashland Forest Resiliency Project and its work to manage the health of the Ashland Watershed, which is the source for Ashland’s drinking water. In January, the U.S. Forest Service approved a Master Trails Plan for the Ashland Watershed that has been in the making for the past decade. The Master Trails Plan, which was developed with the assistance of the Ashland Woodlands Trails Association, the city of Ashland and many others, includes existing trails as well as new trails that are to be constructed. Designation for trails includes multi-user trails, hike- or bike-only trails and equestrian trails. Beyond the Master Trails Plan, the guide provides a detailed look at the trail system of Ashland and includes the Creek to Crest trail, Grizzly Peak Loop Trail, Oredson-Todd Woods Trails, Pacific Crest Trail and the many trails in the Sky Lakes Wilderness. Partners in the map project were Ashland Forest Resiliency Project, city of Ashland Public Works, Ashland Parks and Recreation, The Nature Conservancy, Fire Learning Network, Lomakatsi and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, with technical support from USFS and BLM. The map features local photography by Jeff McFarland, Sean Bagshaw, Graham Lewis and Lomakatsi. Maps were created by GIS Analyst, Dragonfly Lea Richards with the city of Ashland in partnership with Katharine Cato, director of Ashland’s Visitor and Convention Bureau who created the concept, editorial, images and layout. Graphic design was executed by Dana Welsh, Ashland Chamber staff. The map is free, but donations are encouraged to support the future work of the AFR project.
