The My Favorite Team members were Ava Code, Eden Thompson, Stella Mason, Tyla Garfas-Knowles and alternate James Dyson, and they're coached by parent Ali True. My Favorite Team defeated Logos Public Charter School in the final. Logos Public, based in Medford, won both the middle school and high school divisions. In the OBOB competition, teams of four square off by answering questions about 16 pre-selected books. The team with the most correct answers wins and moves on to the next round. Eighteen elementary schools from across Southern Oregon — some from as far away as Klamath Falls and Wolf Creek — were represented Saturday, and My Favorite Team had to win several one-on-one competitions in order to advance to the final. True said My Favorite Team members read the books several times, met after school and on weekends and even sacrificed recess time to study. "They worked very well as a team," she said, "with the spokesperson consulting all team members before answering, and displayed model sportsmanship and grace." The books are selected with the reading level and maturity of fourth- and fifth-graders in mind. This year's selections included "Diamond Willow" by Helen Frost, "Flora and Ulysses" by Kate DiCamillo and "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan. Several community volunteers and school staff members were on hand to run the event. The state competition will be held April 9 at Chemeketa Community College.
